I wanted to ask people here if you were to start a new site now what would it be on?

I'm planning on a web designing info and help site for which I'm hoping to write original articles. I know that there are a hundred sites in this category but there is nothing informative enough. Is it worthwhile to make such a site and hope it would function well on google and adsense?

Where there is a *need* there is a way.

If you looked for where to get web design information you *need* and didn't find a resource suitable... yes, try and build it. Before you do, ask yourself "What tag line would go at the top of every page explaining the purpose of the site?". If you don't know what that mission statement would have, then you should work on the concept.

I'm seriously thinking about starting a directory site.

Some may derisively call it a "scraper," but they seem to be popping up everywhere. With so many people doing it, it has to be making money.

I also intend to use multiple revenue sources (besides just AdSense) to monetize the site.

Until one or more of the search engines changes their ranking formulas (adding the proposed TrustRank sort of thing that they're proposing), I think this proliferation of scraper sites will continue. I think that one search engine in particular is making it easy (or at least easier) for these sites to muscle out more legitimate sites.

About building a web site, I write no sites.

I deliver seminars starting at 3.600 EUR for creating together an up to 100 pages site and teaching how to do it.

I'm seriously thinking about starting a directory site.

Isn't it difficult promoting a directory site and actually even difficult to fill it with links?

I've experienced difficulty in promoting any new site! Not managed to get more than 30-40 unique hits per day on a new site. But my old site gets about 3k [unfortunately since its entertainment based I can't direct hits from there]

I'd create a travel related site. Seems most people do their travel 'shopping' on line these days.

I would go with something that you know and understand. That way you can create a lot of content that will keep your visitors coming back for more. Also you won't have to do a lot of research on the topic since you already know a good amount about the topic.

I think it will be difficult to promote it, but my feeling is that I can get enough terms to rank well to where I'll get natural SERP traffic. I'm not worried about the lack of links initially, there are ways to get content onto the page related to the page itself. I'm also going to use it to feed into some of my other sites (same theme), so it's not a total loss if the directory doesn't get a high number of links. I think the links will come with traffic, which is kind of a chicken and egg sort of situation. I figure that, if nothing else, the extra text links to my site will help. If the site makes money, it's sorta like sprinkles on ice cream.
