Hi all,

a simple question i guess. In a 4 ad horizontal block, typically found on top or at the bottom of a page i have seen on a site of mine that the top left ad is a real provider of the widget. on the right hand site i have ads that are adword to adsense players paying the minimum 5 cents.

I have a CTR 7%.

I am now looking to test a new layout.

Get rid of these horizontal blocks of 4 ads and place a one or two block ad in the middle top of each page (probably just under the H1 and alongside the content (ie the menu on the left, then the ads then the content on the right, panning out after passing the ads to fill the content div).

This would require vetting all the wiki style advertisers, and having 3-4 real advertisers. There is a big jump between the 2 types of advertisers in my earnings. I have a good imforative articles based site on widgets.

So has anybody tried something similar, especially vetting low paying adverts?

I have a CTR 7%.

This information is absolut useless without knowing the theme of the site.

I use the same layout on several different sites with different themes.

The CTR differs in a range of 1:10 depending on the theme of the site.

well just thought i should post this..

by doing what i stated above i have seen the ctr jump from 7% to 20-22%.

the eCPM has more than tripled.

Basically i placed the 250*250 blcok in a folating div just under the H1. With the content running alongside the ad then widenning out once past the ad.

Just a question, when you say:
This would require vetting all the wiki style advertisers, and having 3-4 real advertisers. There is a big jump between the 2 types of advertisers in my earnings.

If your leftmost advert is a real payer and the other 3 are cheapie wiki (should that be wigi ;-) ) listings, if you cut them out, aren't you just going to get advertisers that are paying even less than they are?

I mean if you vet the low paying listings, aren't there only going to be more low paying ones behind them?

Fortunately this niche has 4 real advertisers (the actually send you to a site that tries to sell you the widget).

they tend to have a clearly established pattern in the ad blocks. But the top 2 at top payers.

OddDog: My experience has been that cutting the 4 block ad unit to 2 does result in higher earnings as well as increased ctr BUT on my site, the overall clicks decreased. Why? I just cut the amt. of ads being served in half and thereby cut the appeal margin by 50%. You'll have to test which method will profit your particular site more in the long run. Since I have a high traffic, high page site I decided to go for 4 ads at less income route. Think Wal-Mart strategy.
