Better placement for highest epc

Over the last two weeks, I've noticed a pattern in the highest paying ad running on my site. This ad always seems to be placed at the left of the leaderboard banner in the best possible placement. This particular advertiser pays 3 to 4 times per click what the other ads currently bring in. Just wondering...

I always thought this was generally understood, but I can't remember where I know it from.

IMO this is why it is better to have a half banner with two ads versus a leaderboard
