Endorsement of Check

Difference in name and signature

Sorry for my little knowledge on endorsement of a check.

Actually as an international publisher, I got my march check. I have deposited to my bank where my name is with the bank account record is, say "JOHN SMITH", But my signature at the bank record is "JSmith" I use this signature to withdraw money from my bank.

Now during endorsement of Google check, as I never did it earlier, I have signed my bank recorded signature "JSmith" at the back of the check, as blank endorsement. The Google check is written to "JOHN SMITH"

Now my question is, will the above check be encashed? if there is a problem, what kind of this could be, and how to fix this?

My bank will send the check to US for encashing it.

I think I have done a silly mistake here. Please help.

This really depends on the rules in your country. Some years ago here in the Netherlands there was a man on television who used a drawing of his face as his signature. It was accepted on both his passport and drivers license.

On the other hand in the country from where my wife originates (a republic of the former Soviet Union), the signature must be readable as a name and she had to change her signature after marriage.

In general if your bank accepts your signature as official, Google will pay, because it is your personal bank who keeps a copy of your signature in their files and it is their responsability to do the match. The difference between my name and my signature is comparable with your example and I have never had problems cashing Google checks.

Thanks Lammert. You relieved my pain. Actually the signature is the official signature on file with my bank, so I think my bank should have no problem cashing the check.

Earlier I was thinking that Google's bank, Citibank is going to verify this signature and i thought they will raise a question for the difference in "JOHN SMITH" and "JSmith". Anyway, I understand now, it is OK.

Using drawing of face as a signature is really innovative and interesting. I do not know whether my bank will accept it or not, I will try it if I open a new account someday.

I use a "symbol" for my signature (although I'm in the US) and I haven't had a problem cashing checks :)

The same "symbol" is on my driver's license, passport, bank signing card, etc.

I think as long as your bank can verify that it's your signature, then the bank writing the check won't have a problem.

Not trying to confuse matters, but here in the UK I have been told at my bank I must endorse my Google cheque with a signature that is readable as my full name as shown on the front (Didn't even realise it need endorsing before I took it in, I've never had to do it before with domestic cheques). Now I dont know if this is the same everywhere else, and if others say they have been paid they obviousl y not

My cheque is payable to a trading name and I just write the same name on the back of the cheque (not my real signature).

The bank (here in the UK) insists that what is written on the back of the cheque is the name that the cheque is payable to.

Still, with EFT that's a another problem that I will not have ;-)

NatWest (UK) want the name the cheque is payable to written on the endosement. The cheque is in my wife's name, and one time she did her usual signature. I had to come all the way home from the bank to get her to write the name on it - AND pay charges to park twice. Grrrrr. Thankfully EFT starts this month :)
