Does anyone see a problem with this? Ordinarily, I wouldn't think there's a problem at all. The link will be oneway only (no crosslinking) and at most there will be 1-3 links going from the first site to the second.
However, since this is adsense we're talking about, I feel compelled to ask if anyone sees a potential downside to this.
Clearly, google should be able to distinguish that the two sites are owned by the same person since the adsense code will appear on both. Is there any possibility google will devalue the link, or am I just being paranoid?
Also, does anyone have any reason to believe that adding code to a second, new site will somehow interfere with the performance of the first site? Again, that doesn't seem logical that it should...but most of us also thought that adding a second ad unit would be beneficial and for a lot of us it certainly was not.

Yes, it is logical...to me. I have a few sites with adsense on it. A few of them have the same theme(Theme A) but in different niche. I have totally different theme site(Theme B) with forum on it. In fact this is my oldest site. It has link to my other sites and the CTR is very low(forums...). For some time it showed the totally different themed site(Theme A)'s adsense on this forum. After a year with adsense, it has fixed itself but it still shows one out of four leaderboard ads from the linked site's theme(Theme A). It could be because i get a lot of clicks from the theme A sites...or it is because the forum page has links to the theme A sites at the bottom...
