Hi just recently(18th Feb) added google adsense to my site, since then i have earned $360 dollars to date(1st april). with an average page impressions 22,128, clicks 113, clickthrough 0.5% and effective cpm of $0.39 (average daily earning $8.50) Having just started in the exciting world of adsense i was wondering if these are good stats or bad, do i need to optimize my pages more ( i have currently just changed the colours to match my site). Any feedback would be appreciated.

neob Welcome to WebmasterWorld.

You may want to edit your post. It is against AdSense TOS to discuss your specific stats. However, Google does allow you to mention your overall earnings.

As mentioned, you will need to edit your post before a moderator comes along and does it for you.

In the meantime, what type of site do you have?

seems like you aren't doing so bad considering how low the clickthrough is. Probably a 3 percent clickthrough is considered fairly decent. You would be earning six times what you currently get if you could achieve a 3% target, so it sounds as if your earnings potential is fairly good.

Total earnings / clicks = EPC (earnings per click)

I think you are in a sector that is not a high paying niche, so I'm guessing you are doing OK. I would say that experimenting with banner styles, positions, colour schemes are well worth doing - and can dramatically increase ctr and earnings.

My tips are:-

1. Be true to the purpose of the site. Visitors come there for the content and NOT the ads. Nobody visits a site because they might just have some cool ads. Keep the content up to date, and keep adding new stuff for repeat visitors. From my observations here, Adsense works best on sites with good quality content.

2. If possible, give each banner it's own channel and watch performance closely. If they underperform remove them. Don't be tempted to add excessive numbers of banners - less is more, and often EARNS you more too!

3. Don't be afraid to experiment with different positions of ads. I started with a small single ad in the top right hand corner. It grew to a right aligned skyscraper and is now a centre positioned large rectangle. It looks fine on the page as I spent a lot of time adjusting the page layout. I even have made the navigation menu slightly more subtle by using a smaller font, and dark grey instead of black. My ctr, epc and earning trebled by moving it to the centre of the page.

4. Don't expect it to be an instant money spinner. You need to experiment with what works best for your site, and it takes time to evaluate any changes. But it's worth sticking with.

My earnings the first month I had Adsense (Jan 2004) I thought were superb - I got a cheque having cleared the $100 - just. I started adsense to (hopefully) pay for the site hosting. By sticking with it, experimenting with banner styles, placement etc. and keeping the content up to date I've moved from getting a cheque to having to pass adsense over to my wife to set up a business and pay tax on it.

Oh, and don't forget to be aware of the adsense TOS and stick to them! Plenty of advice on that here.

wow thanks david those are some great, in depth tips, i will definetley give them a try. I currently have my ads as a left hand skyscraper(2 ads) as i heard this is best since users naturally look to the lhs for a menu, but my menu was at the top anyway.

I gather there is a "hotspot" map somewhere - Jenstar (our moderator) mentioned it a short while ago. I would say that what works for one site doesn't necessarily work for another - you really do need to experiment!

When you say 2 ads, do you mean you have the 120*240 vertical banner, or two skyscrapers on the page?

If you have two or more banners on one page, then (IMHO) it's essential you use channels for both, and if one is not performing then ditch it.

I would be inclined to try having a real menu where visitors expect to see one, and then the ads in a block next to the menu - effectively central on the page. That's the format I use, and it's worked exceptionally well for me. It may not help you as each site is different, but it's worth giving a go.

Sounds as though you are running some kind of a forum,
as those stats are in line with a good board,

I am also doing about the saem as you, and i also started only a month and a bit ago,

I get 12k impression and avg 25 clicks per day, and about 8us/day at the moment

Feel free to contact me anytime,
and we can discuss stratergies,

It sounds as though you are doing quite well,
It is just a matter of getting the adsense adds to match your customers interests, and needs,

neob,

If you add it to the template/subliver, then edit overall_header

then you will find, a very exciting difference,
