Using your AdSense Channels

How many are you tracking?

At the Google AdSense Bay Area Forum [webmasterworld.com] I stressed the use of channels for testing purposes. I also did the same in Las Vegas for the WebmasterWorld Conference [webmasterworld.com]. And I am always surprised at the number of people who remark that they only use a handful of channels... if they use any at all. And I have been asked for help by publishers who want advice on what they can do to increase their earnings, and I am also surprised at how many of them do not track channels (although it has gotten better since URL channels were released). On the other hand, I have seen publishers here lament the fact you are limited to a specific number of channels (currently 100).

How many channels are you currently using? Do you prefer custom channels or URL channels? And do you check them on a regular basis, then use that information to improve AdSense on specific pages/sites?

I currently have about 50 active channels (I haven't added more channels since they upped the limit from 60 recently, but I plan to). Nearly all of them are custom channels, which is the way I prefer to track channels. Custom channels also enables me to track differences between multiple ad unit on the same page(s).

And yes, I do check them on a regular basis, and I primarily use it to see the most profitable sites and/or sections of sites, and use that information to add new content to those sites/areas.

A little insight to how I do things ;) And a piece of advice if you don't use channels, or only have a couple enabled... start using them - and lots of them - so you can see what pages are working well and what pages are lacking :)

I have about 40 channels set up. They are all custom channels, haven't set up any URL channels yet.

On pages with a lot of traffic I like to set up 2 seperate channels for that page to see the how the ctr varies with ad size and location.

I have 20+ channels as well as many URL channels. I don't know how people can run this business successfully if not using channels. Myself I do some ppc to test out new content so its very important to me to use channels to see how my efforts might yield when the page enters natural search. I've often found golden subjects or duds within 7 days by using PPC and channels. Another thing I do is keep a log of changes i've made to sites as a result of data i've seen from channels. This helps me correlate ups and downs in channel data with my own behavior.

I've got whatever the maximum number of channels was before (60, I think), but I don't track them very carefully. I check them now and then mostly out of curiosity, because it's interesting to know what topics (either subdirectories or specific articles) are generating revenue for the site. I don't let AdSense dictate what I cover or don't cover, though. That wouldn't be a good idea for editorial reasons, and it probably wouldn't be a good idea from a business point of view, either, since the bulk of my revenues don't come from AdSense.

I have around 30 channels, one for every major section and subcategory on my site. I also have a few that track single pages.

It helps a great deal in seeing what's going on, and often reveals some real surprizes, both positive and negative.

I use 20+ custom channels. In these majority of the channels are to track the earnings by page, I use remaining channels to track the earnings by adblock. I track these channels daily, and make necessery changes. I tried to use URL channels to track individual page earnings. But somehow URL channels are not working for me. Most of the URL channels are not showing any impressions and earnings. So I reverted back to custom channels.

i use a channel for every main section of my site, as well as a few channels for sub sections in the more popular areas.

i never really did get url channels. who do we have to set those up?
i set up a few and then disabled them.
google can see what url an ad request is comming from without us telling them. oh well...

24 channels
13 URL channels

Normal channels are per site and language

my-domain/english
my-domain/german
my-other-domain/english
my-other-domain/german

The URL channels are mainly to watch new folders

my-domain/new-folder
my-domain/other-new-folder

My wife started also to translate pages from german to english, so some URL chanells are also to show her how much money her work brings.

I use channels for different types of pages, different locations on a page, and different color schemes. I haven't been using nearly as many as I could lately, partially for fear of burning through all my channels and then having to recycle old channels that already have data in them. That is going to get really annoying -- I sure hope Google starts allowing the deletion of channels.

yea, i just thought to mention that g should allow channels to be deleted.

that and they should have the channel data as up to date as the aggregate data.

Mostly a banner per page - I don't have ads on most pages, just the ones adsense works on. I also have a banner on each Adlinks unit I'm trialling.

Up until a month ago, I was using only two custom channels to differentiate the data between my two sites. Dumb, dumb...

Since around March 1st, I have been using about 90 channels, both URL channels and custom channels, to track page categories and ad types across both sites.

I note and record the channel data daily.

I only have 6 channels (one for each site / major section)

But, I regularly have "temporary" channels that I use for optimisation of the results.

The bulk of my main site are 19.000 dynamic pages: on these pages I randomly display ads in two different ways (different positions, formats etc.)
I use two channels to monitor the two different results and after a few days I am able to see which channel performs better.

At the moment, after having optimized position and format of the ads I have an increase of 80% in revenues.

In a few days I will start experimenting with colors..

Channels are extremely helpful!
If only they were updated faster...

I have about 20 custom channels, covering different areas/sections of my sites.

I've enabled some URL channels too, but so far they largely overlap with the custom ones.

I have about 30 custom channels and 20 url ones.

I have recently changed the postioning and size of one set of ads on about 15% of the site's pages and am getting 3x% CTR instead of x. And that has lasted for seven solid days...in fact yesterday was 4x%

I'm almost frightened of rolling it out across the rest of the site....!

other adsensers will understand that fear.

Is there a trick for checking channels? That mini scroll-box drives me nutty and holds me back from increasing my channels.

Well said flobaby:-)

Ever accidentally clicked two channel boxes and wondered what the hell had happened?

I usually click Active and then select show my channel.

I know everytime that little section gets expanded in height, people complain because it limits them from seeing their $ totals without having to scroll when they login, depending on the screen size.

There was a previous discussion here on how AdSense could layout that section better, but I don't think anyone came up with any suggestions that would work really well.

It is interesting most people only have 20-30 channels in use. Has anyone maxed out their available channels?

I was just checking my stats, the interesting thing is that parts of my site that I never expected to generate any real income do quite well, surpizingly well actually.

Channels allow you to see that sort of thing very clearly.

WOW!

This is one of the top two or three most important messages I've ever read on this Forum.

Why bother with channels? I use my own click tracker, I don't need to rely on Google for statistics. My click tracker updates in realtime, and gives me much more information....

I have my channels set up by "site + adblock size + location on the page". From this I can see which adblock size and which location has the best performance on each of my sites. I don't bother with individual site pages or sections as I have the adblocks located in the same places on every page of the site that is tracked by the channel. Also, I don't currently use the same combination of "adblock size + location on the page" for each of my sites, though that may eventually happen.

I use my own click tracker

None of the click trackers give you $$. I have sections within the same website with similar traffic and CTR - yet one outperforms the other in terms of EPC several times over. Obviously, the section that outperforms $$ is the one I will try and drive additional traffic to, as well as continue to add to.

Oh, Berto, you make me blush ...

The random selection was the part that convenced me I was doing right.

With all the odd variations of CPC you have, where a page could have a higher CPC just because it contains a few keywords you aren't even aware of, understanding the real correlation between ad settings and CTR is often tricky.

With a random selection (and large-ish number of impressions) you have better hopes to "neutralize" other effects..

That was my epiphany. That technique is the only practical way that one can simulate ceteris paribus in this chaotic test environment.

One can apply the technique across the board, even to non-Adsense page elements, to assess your every change.

Happily for me, I had the tools at hand to implement the technique within two hours of reading your post.

It's like now I have a compass, and a way out of the wilderness.

Profound stuff. Many, many thanks.
