AdSense payments: PIN

I just noticed the following on the AdSense support pages (under Payments):

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is mailed to each AdSense publisher when earnings are accrued on their account. This PIN helps us to verify publisher addresses and protect the personal information of our publishers. If a PIN has been mailed to you, we will hold all payments until the PIN has been entered. However, your account will still be accessible, and you'll continute to be able to show ads and accrue earnings.

Is this new? I've never read this info before, was thinking it might be one of the changes in the AdSense program. Have also received payments without any hassle about any PIN whatsoever.

.. very interesting .... maybe for when (if) they introduce direct deposits - to confirm its you and your account ...

New to me as well ... perhaps it's a sign that they're moving in the 'right' direction.

I agree. Probably has everything to do with the fact that they're planning on introducing new payment types for AdSense publishers. Their website states it'll be launched within a few months. Can't wait! I'll finally get rid of those ridiculously high fees my bank charges when processing an international check. :)

It's been around for a few months at least, I can't remember exactly when they began doing it. I believe when they started doing it, it wasn't yet on the webpage though.

I recall someone posting about that about a month ago. Even though they mention PIN's in the support pages, there is no mention of it under the payment section in the official Terms and Conditions. They also make mention of the fact that you can click on the PIN link in your account information section, but I see no such link. I wonder if it's more to do with either new accounts or specific locations rather than any pending direct payment scheme?

It is a confirmation step for new accounts, although I am not sure if all new accounts go through it at this time.
