I keep hearing about 3 and 5 cent clicks.

Just curious. Without giving away urls and specific sites, which content areas---based on the various experiences of this forum's members---suck the most?

Anything aimed at children and teenagers, especially video games and anime. Not only is the CPC rock-bottom, the CTR is awful and it's frequently hard to get well-targeted ads.

Celebrity and Fan websites generally stink in earnings. So do Florist ads and Wedding stuff.

That's all I know about. I've been fortunate in the topics I like to write about and the websites I had before I joined adsense. Very fortunate.

I've got one website that went from 3 advertisers a year ago to 9-12 with bigger daily budgets. So the sites that are duds today could be winners tomorrow. As I reported in another thread, online advertising is set to grow by 20 percent in 2005 in the USA alone.

It's the boom times baby. Enjoy it while it lasts. I am blowing all my money on Mexican Donkey porn and RealNetwork stock options.

(some of you might get that last one).

Yes, follow the money. Kids generally don't have it. Anything aimed at younger folks will probably have a lower click value.

Even within a sector, there's a lot of variation. For example, in travel, ads for five-star hotels in Paris will probably fetch higher bids than ads for youth hostels in Palermo.

EPC isn't everything, though. I've got some URL channels with extremely high EPCs and CPMs, but they don't generate as much revenue as some of my lower-EPC/CPM directories and pages because they get far less traffic.

One thing I've learned from channels is just how wide the diffrerences in results can be, even on a single site.

There can be huge differences in every measure from channel to channel.

Some make me wonder if the cash is worth the real estate.

Others make me very glad I thought to write the content.

People just taking a trip down memory lane don't click very often, and when they do, it doesn't pay very well.

People intent on buying back their memories is another story.

At least that's what it looks like for me.

In my experience, a site where

1 people tend to find what they where looking for
2 the content is about a subjet where the core advertisers aren't really allowed to advertise
3 having an audience from all around the world

Will result in hopelessly bad earings per click.

We should have given up on AdSence long ago in that site, but the money is in fact not worse than the existing CPM programs, and affiliate programs in this area are so very local that the effort of keeping them up and running costs more than it's possible to earn on them.

But it's a great site for building PR to give away to other projects. And at least, the AdSence money at least covers the hosting costs.

I'm not giving away this lousy niche area, but it's about recipes, and check the TOS for why I'm not saying more + areas where advertisers aren't allowed...

vabtz, is your site selling equipment and concert tickets, or CDs and the like?

(Without revealing too much about your site, of course.)

no

my site is regionally based in an area where we are a very small group so online ticket sales are out.

I have looked at equipment sales for the future via affiliates.

Music was a bust ( low returns and very few people bought )

Adsense is starting to work like a charm though now that I got the hang of how to get it making money. Started a for sale section of the site to get the user to generate content for search engines for marketable terms. Also I have an articles section and that is where I make most of my money from search engine referrals & adsense.

Entertainment sites aren't that great either.

Does anyone have any experience with interior design sites?

having an audience from all around the world

ditto that + having a second language on the site with no AdSense advertisers

Generally, with all this hoopla about content on WW, IMHO 4 out of 5 content sites make no money.

That's probably true of affiliate and e-commerce sites, too. When the cost of entry is low, you get a lot of dabblers.
