Just wondering whether the time of the day for a clickthrough can be a factor in deciding our revenue (in smart pricing)?

that's a good question. A lot of things make us more inclined to do certain things, like music and colors, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was true too. The time of day generally affects how we're feeling, and I'm sure someone studied this already, I just don't knwo the answer

Interesting point walkman, although I was talking about the factors in google smart pricing algo. But what you are saying raises another important factor in getting clicks from visitors (?human algorithm). It might be possible that certain sites (like professional information pages) might attract more clicks during the day time from the visitors looking for information from their workplace comps and certain kind of sites (leisure or timepass type) attract clicks from home users in evenings. But still, the question is whether this will make any difference for smart pricing algo?

Geographic location from visitors changes during the day. As visitors from within the country of an advertiser might result in a higher conversion rate than visitors abroad, the smart pricing algorithm could take this as a parameter. Also ads displayed differ for different countries, so pages with high keyword value for visitors in one country might have a low keyword value in other countries. I think these can be effects that you might see as resulting from the smart pricing algorithm.

These are just speculations. Google doesn't tell us the backgrounds of their algorithms, nor are people who know about it allowed to talk about it because of the TOS.

agree.

But can we come up with a list of all the speculations in one place to explore smart pricing algo. I think if every one posts their speculations about smart pricing based on their experience with adsense, we would cover almost all the factors.

I'll start with mine:

1. Content type (reviews/information/scraped)
2. URL matches (widget in url for a page displaying an ad of widgets will pay more than otherwise, based on personal experience)
3. Title tages (they do matter)
4. Time of day?
5. Geographical location of clickers
6. Geographical location of website's IP
7. Specificity of the page (does it target a specific product or endorses several products)
8. Final and most important - if adsense was not there, would the advertiser be intersted in advertsing directly on your page?

feel free to ad(d) to the list...

This is pure speculation, and I am aware that during the day the adsense stats for various reasons mean diddly-squat.

My site is based in the UK, but the bulk of my traffic is from the US. I get the most site traffic during the hours when corporate America is at it's desk. Weekends and US public holidays are invariably lower than normal working weekdays. During the day I have noticed that the price per click apparently increases during the hours when America is in the office - before that the click price seems to me to be invariably lower.

I know that you cannot take anything meaningful from the Google stats, but it is just possible that G knows when I get the most page loads, the most ad loads, and the most clicks, and therefore prices accordingly.

Doubt it, it's probably just delayed impressions counts data catching up with clicks or vice versa.
Although I swear I have one pesky T.S. (traffic sucker - who bids way low but comes up in high in the ads) who only comes up after business hours and is hard to detect directly. It could be possible some of your highest bidders only run their adwords campaigns during business hours when they are there to answer the telephone and pause them at night.

How about someone with a lot of impressions makes a simple php script that rotates a different channel every hour. Report back here in a week.

As a contextual advertiser I can say that, based on the time of day, my cpc is going through dramtic changes..
