I noticed that you can customize the display of the ads beyond the samples given. Is this against the TOS?

You may not modify the code they provide you in any way.

Does that answer your question?

You can modify it in your control panel. Premium publishers have more ad style variety, so that is likely what you are noticing on other sites.

Where in the control panel can you customize the ads beyond the sample types?

Click on "Manage color palettes" under "Color palettes". You can set up and save several of your own.

I think it's ok to put in color codes other than the ones they provide. Jenstar, please tell us if I'm wrong on that.

Yes you can change the colours from the default palettes they give you setting up your own custom palettes. It's all demonstrated (briefly) in the Quick Start guide [google.com] for how to do it (Step 2) although it's quite intuitive. You can even have borderless ads (once a very controversial thing to do. ;) ). However certain colour combinations aren't allowed - eg white text, white background, no border, white link text as you'd end up with invisible ads! You can make 200 different custom colour palettes if you so wish!
