Am I allowed to pre-fill a Google search box?

Is it within the Google Adsense terms and conditions to pre-fill a search box query...

eg. your webpage is about widgets, so can you put 'widgets' in the search box query already for the viewer.. ready for them to click the search/go button

?

Also, can you put tempting text alongside the search box...

ie. looking for more info on 'widgets', then use the search box below to find what you're looking for?

I know you can't encourage your viewers to click on the Adsense text ads, but is it the same for the search boxes?

I think you know the answer. But here's the cliff's notes version, from this page: [google.com...]

#2:

"You agree to ... not [modify] the JavaScript or other programming provided to You by Google in any way, unless expressly authorized in writing by Google (including by electronic mail)."

If You have elected to receive Search Results, you will display on Your Site(s) a Google search box (a "Search Box") in accordance with the specifications provided by Google.

#5

You shall not, and shall not authorize or encourage any third party to: (i) directly or indirectly generate queries

There's more, but those two are enough to answer your questions.

It might be worth your time to re-read the Terms & Conditions.

The answer, when I last asked Google, was "no".

Thanks for the responses!

I'm sure I've seen this tactic used on other sites previously, which is why I asked if it was ok with Google

The above answers suggest that it isn't okay with the Google TOS to pre-fill a search box... so I guess I'll give it a miss!

(unless anyone can tell me different?)

Answer is definitely no. And AdSense will send warnings to publishers caught doing it.

If you are lucky, they'll send you a warning. If you are unlucky, they will cancel your account.

If you are unsatisfied, ask Adsense support directly. No one except Google can answer your question authoritatively.

I even asked Adsense if I could modify the code so it would pass validation and was told no.
