According to Google's 3rd quarter earnings report, "revenue generated on Google's partner sites, through AdSense programs, contributed $384.3 million, or 48 percent of total revenue, a 120 percent increase over the Network revenue generated in the same quarter last year."

Reflects the importance of AdSense to Google.

I don't think by AdSense they mean what you mean. AdSense, as I heard it described on their earnings call, is all search and contextual advertising revenue that comes from non-Google domains. This would also include, then, search distribution partners like Ask Jeeves, AOL, etc, in addition to the classic AdSense business.

It might be 48% of total revenue, but margins ought to be higher on non-revenue sharing activities such as AdWords - there was post here showing that Google pays out ~80% of AdSense revenues to partners, they ought to be keeping far more (100%?) of the money from AdWords.

So, in terms of bulk sales figure AdSense is good to excite market and drive share price to the skies, but in terms of real money it does not appear to be _that_ significant IMO.

shorebreak: You are right that the term AdSense as used by Google doesn't mean what most people on this board assume it means. It includes all the premium partners as well as the non-premium "content publishers" like most of us on this board.

The point is that AdSense is a very important part of Google’s income stream and as such they should continue to invest heavily in the technology and the program (positive) and/or could reduce payouts to publishers if necessary for a quick earnings bump (negative).
