AS Search and ads there: permitted?

The AS TOS states "display any Ad(s) on any error page, registration or "thank you" page..."

Now I set up a site so that a 404 or 500 error leads the user to a search page that serves as the regular site search page as well. I got Google Adsense search there and one ad unit.

Is this allowed?

If it is the page that people would get when the page they are looking for cannot be found, then no, you cannot have any AdSense ad units on there. But an AdSense search box is okay.

So it's OK to have the adsense search on a 404 error page?

As far as I can tell, yes, AdSense search is fine on a 404 page. The policies only exclude ad units from a 404 page.

What if the 404 leads back to the index page?

If you see that page only by arriving from a 404 error, you can't. But index page is visible in any way, so you can.
