I just launced my website a couple days ago and joined cj to start affiliating... I definitely would like to apply for adsense but I feel as if I should wait until my website gets sufficient traffic... When is the best time to apply for adsense?... I feel it would be pretty pointless now since I havent listed my website on any search engines yet... Should I start applying for adsense now or should I wait until the site is getting more traffic.... Does google take adsense away if you arent getting enough hits?

There is no harm in getting up and running - I've never noticed a penalty for not performing well.

I've never noticed a penalty for not performing well.
We would never know if there was or wasn't because if we ask google they would tell us that they can't divulge due to the nature of their proprietary algorithim etc. There may indeed be some penalty(short of being booted I mean), lower epc, lower rates, more scrutiny of clicks etc etc.

Just make sure the site is *complete*. If you have "under construction" or "coming soon" you will probably not be accepted.

blairsp - what do you mean by "booted"?

Do you mean they simply serve no ads and/or community service announcements to your pages?

He means haveing your account terminated. If you read Google's T&C they have a few points stating they reserve the right to not pay you, and to terminate your contract at any time (as you do the other way round).

I wish I'd put up Adsense a year ago.

If poor performance is a reason for termination - does that mean I should disable the ads during times when I'm doing heavy testing?

I'm lazy and use the server to test my php code sometimes. During those times the click through rate can be even lower than my usual low rate.

Maybe I should pass a flag in the query string when I'm testing and not display the ads if this "debug" flag is "on"?

Now I think about, I might even do that anyway just to make the stats more accurate :) Just embed the Google JS in a PHP include and only pull it in when the query string is not "xyz".

hi,
I have just put up a new site last week on car parts. It is complete and informative site of about 20 pages of useful content.

Traffic has still not started and i guess this takes time. What are the chances of being accepted for adsense if i apply now.

Or should I wait till it gets some traffic? How many visitors a day / page impressions is necessary to be accepted. Does page rank count?

thanks in advance,
newbee

So long as the site looks better than amateurish you should have no problems (as far as I know). I don't think traffic matters and PR certainly does not.

Jenstar's the moderator of this forum so s/he should know:

No I'm not saying that. All I am saying is that the majority of people don't really know what Google's thinking is on certain matters and even the people of this forum are (perhaps informed) but outsiders.

No-one really knows if this does affect your income and I am sure that G won't tell you.

To date, there is no evidence that Google has cancelled anybody's AdSense account over low performance. The rest is speculation.

Exactly. Unfortunately, something which we all do at times.

Are you speculating that one click on ad "x" at site "y" earns more than one click on ad "x" at site "z"?

Even better, do you have proof?

It is my understanding that is what "smart pricing" does.

For example, a click on an ad for digital cameras on a web page about photography tips may be worth less than a click on the same ad appearing next to a review of digital cameras.

Sorry - I've obviously not been keeping in touch much over the last few months :(

I guess what that means (with respect to the original intent of this thread) is that you can sign up anytime (so long as the site is up to some standard of completeness) and it may improve in performance as time goes by and your content changes.

That is correct. Google has what is called Smart Pricing which "can" reduce what an advertiser's CPC would be based upon the "value" assigned by Google to the site where the click originated.

Actually contrary to what most people are saying, I don't think it's a good idea to sign up if you will be making very little money with little or no traffic.

They won't penalize you for having low traffic, but it can still hurt you-- if you only earn $25/month, and they have any tiny suspicion of fraudalent clicks on your account they will terminate it without a second thought and you will be permanently blocked from Adsense. It's just not worth it for them to do an in depth manual review if you make no money.

If you have some traffic and make decent money on the other hand, they will not terminate your account so lightly. I bet high-earning sites get a much more fair review process so are much less likely to be accidentally booted for fraud.
