i.e., If I have ads running down the right side of the page, is it OK to put 3 ad units on top of each other so that they run down the length of the page (one ad unit on top of another)?

have certainly seen it on a few sites I have visited recently (all trying to capture the magical keyword starting with M). Looks shockingly tacky,amateurish and desperate. Other than that though, if it works for your site-go for it.

Yes, you can do it - if it is blended well, it looks fine.
