I have just signed up for an Adsense account and I am looking for some advice. The problem I have is that when I am on my own site the ads that are being served are of interest to me as well as my site visitors. Sooner or later I will find myself clicking on them without thinking. Does this get me an instant jail sentence or do I have to do this repeatedly before it gets flagged?

Also what are the recommendations wrt placement within the site? Currently I have placed them in a banner at the top of each page. Would I do better if I placed them inside the pages?

(Apologies if this has been asked a million times before.)

I don't know if you are "busted" as far as the clicking on your own ads thing, but I am sure Google knows about it. Google forbids us to click on your own ads. "Invalid clicks" is a really effective way to get booted off of Adsense, so I've heard.

I clicked on some of my own ads on the first day that I signed up. After reading these boards I realized that I was being a moron and was skating on thin ice, so I wrote Google, told them that I'd clicked on a few ads, that I didn't know any better but now I do, and asked them to please have mercy on me. They wrote back right away and reminded me that yes, it was most definitely forbidden to click on my own ads. They also had mercy on me and didn't kick me out. ;)

I don't know what you should do, but I know that it certainly did not hurt me to fess up and tell them that I'd been an idiot. I've never clicked on an ad since, and so far, so good.

As far as the placement of your ads goes—I don't want to pretend I know much about that. I really think it depends on the page, the layout, etc. You might experiment a little and see what placement works best for you. I started out with all small ads, unobtrusively at the bottom, and then I started making them larger ads (Leaderboards), a little higher up (right under the content or article text). My earnings improved dramatically, but I'm not discounting the possibility of moving the ads somewhere else later on.

Sooner or later I will find myself clicking on them without thinking...... do I have to do this repeatedly before it gets flagged?

If you don't have the self-control to not click on your ads, I suggest you edit your site so that the AdSense code is not displayed when accessed from your IP address.

Otherwise, you will get booted out of the program eventually.

If you're interested in an Ad, just note the URL and go type it in your browswer.

Fine - but not intuitive.

It becomes intuitive pretty quick :)

I agree - I really don't think you'll find it a problem - you'll get instinctively used to the "don't click here!" area on your pages...

As for position - the best answer to that question is to try variation. It will differ from site to site.

Bang in the middle of content seems to be the best "generic" answer.

But then, I've had great success on certain pages having AdSense at the bottom of the page, or below the fold. I could never work out why, but it works.

I would suggest you run with each variation for a month before drawing conclusions though.

You can also get the AdSense Preview Tool if you want to be able to click through and get the identical destination URL your visitors would get.

Get in the habit of never clicking on any AdSense ads, and you won't have to worry about clicking on your own.

It has already been said, but let me reinforce it. Never click on any Adsense ad on your own site. It is the quickest way to get band from Adsense.

I too made a couple of inadvertant clicks on my own ads, and immediately, that same day notified adsense of the problem. I think they understand that people like me can be clumsy or careless (I've been trying to corner the market on this for years) and also get it that 2 or 3 clicks will make little or no difference over a period of several months of traffic. I was forgiven and I try harder than ever not to screw up.

"Confession is good for the soul." (and for your relationship with G as well it seems) I think if you're straightforward with them, you'll fine they are willing to understand.

Good luck!

If you're interested in an Ad, click on the portion of the ad that says, "Ads by Google" which will redirect you to a page where you can safely copy and paste the url into your browser.

End of story.

If you want to prevent accidental self-clicking in IE, add the ad server URL (for me, it's http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com) to your Restricted Sites list (Tools > Internet Options > Security tab > click the Restricted Sites icon and then Sites). If you're using the Default settings for that zone, nothing will happen if you click on an ad accidentally. (Regardless of whether the Adsense ad is on your own site or someone else's ... right-click and choose "open in new window" if you want to launch the URL). One drawback is that this keeps the Adsense Preview tool from working. (And of course it's not a good idea to test this out by clicking on your own ads! Click on someone else's ads to see if it works.)
