The real test to see if they are useful...

After reading the dozens of posts about the topic over night, I think that the real test to see if google's explanations for why "related searches" exist is to see if they put something similar up on THEIR own website -- related searches that link to other search engine results, for FREE.

By using google's own logic, it would vastly help improve the end user's web expirence.

If google does this, then I'll be the first to accept google's related searches on my own site.

Heh, Google doesn't even offer "Related Google searches" links on their own SERPS, where I think they would make some sense.

BTW, Google used to offer links to other search engines at the end of the search results. I'm not sure when that stopped.

Exactly. "Enhance user experience?" Yeah, right. That, plus having the "This blank space brought to you by Google" is pissing the hell out of me.

For those that are more interested in profits over how their website looks don't really care. But for me, the look and feel of my site weighs pretty heavily, and to have Google muck it up for whatever reason is not acceptable.
