Steering for relevant targeting?

Editing content for AdSense and other issues...

Sorry, this must be a common topic but couldn't find a recent thread - so here is a new one.

Just learning AdSense and have inserted 3 or 4 pages of URL filters. Have also done a lot of content editing to get better relevancy.

3 problems remain:
1. Tricky page content (semantics?):
The theme/topic of one site is 3D modeling, lighting the modeled scenes and various simulations. When i use text about simulating something, i get ads for the thing i'm simulating, even after inserting words like "3D modeled" or "simulated", etc. in front of the key words.
Example: A page about simulating rotating emergency lights in a modeled 3D scene gets all ads for suppliers of rotating emergency lighting.

I can't directly change the key words triggering these ads, without changing the whole meaning of my content.
Any ideas?

2. Same ads on several pages:
This doesn't seem like efficient use of my ad space. It's nice that some ads are well targeted, but is there some way to keep the same relevant ads from displaying on multiple pages?

3. I keep getting irrelevant ads with a URL roughly like "search . yahoo . shopping..." No way of listing this in the AdSense filter works for these. Other URL's with subdomains filter okay.
Any way to filter these Yahoo! search URLs?

Thanks All!

Here is a fairly recent thread. It was hard to find though. I had to use Google to find it, the webmaster search didn't work that well. It discusses the proximity trick.
[webmasterworld.com...]

Right now I'm struggling with a tricky page content problem. The article is about a 'log cabin quilt' but I'm getting ads for 'building log cabin homes'. I've been filtering log cabin building ads but new ones just keep coming. (sigh) I wouldn't care that much except this is a popular topic in my field, the page just went up and is getting more hits than anything but the homepage on this site.

I used to worry about the same ads on several pages but I'm getting nice CTR so I guess it's not a problem. If you mostly have the same people visiting again and again it would be a problem though. I have a many repeat visitors but luckily I also get a constant stream of new visitors.

On the big shopping general site ads you can at least stop all ads from a given domain by filtering whatever.com instead of www.whatever.com. leave off the www. I have filtered out many of them.

Thanks annej - very helpful info!

On your "log cabin" problem. I don't suppose there are any synonyms you can use for that name?

Or some way to merge the 2 words together in a way that the spider would not parse, but humans would?

Or just put the "false keywords" into a graphic and drop that inline with your text (hey! that last idea might work for me! Hmmmmmm....)

Funny, not only does WebmasterWorld send you answers from others, it helps you answer your own questions :)

Don't forget you can block advertiser URLs - so you could start eliminating "build log cabin" adverts til you started seeing quilting ads.

I've been gradually filtering out 'log cabin builders' and now I'm getting home improvement ads. (aaauuuugggghhh!)

I can't rewrite 'log cabin' as 'logcabin' because I didn't write the article, a historian did. Plus running the words together would just look ignorant anyway. I don't seem to be picking up any quilt related ads and the words 'quilt', 'quilting' and 'quilts' are all over the page in the article, links and navigation guide since that's what the page is about.

I'll try putting a few related words in closer proximity to the ads in the side bar. Then I'll upload a different sized adsense ad and see what happens.

It may just be a lost cause and I'll have to replace AdSense with an Amazon books back up ad but it won't do nearly as well.

Hopefully Google will get better and better at targeting these things. Many of us would like to be able to list a keyword or two or even block a keyword now and then just to improve the targeting. It's been discussed extensively elsewhere on this forum.

Happiness is...

The proximity trick worked. I just put a phrase about quilting above the ad and the word quilt in a link just below the ad. All looks totally natural and I am finally getting well targetted ads.
