also, they no longer allow you to use a PO box. Now I get to have the fun of wondering how I am supposed to get my checks.

Try getting a mail redirecter address or something of the like that is redirected at the post office to your PO box.

They can't do that. I live in Tahoe on the Cali side where I can get mail delivered. On the Nevada side there is no rural delivery. That's right. Come rain, snow, sleet, still of night we (I used to) drive to our P.O. Boxes to ensure the mail gets through.

This business vs individual thing and having to set it forever in stone has got me concerned. My hubby and I have this business together. What if something happened to him? Or if we switch it to my name and something happened to me?

And then there is the PO box problem. If they had automatic payments to our bank, like every other thing like this that I've ever been involved in has, it would be one thing. But our 'on the main road' mail box is not secure and we have all our mail go to our PO box.

I hope someone has some answers on these. Jen, AdSense Advisor, anyone?

We have a business with Tax ID, but we have NO store front for regular business delivery. We need to keep using our PO Box or get direct deposit. I hope someone will explain this to us soon.

My account address is a PO Box here and it didn't complain. Maybe the restriction is for the US only. What about all those mail drops at "suite #nnnn" which are really PO boxes?

Some other countries e.g. Uganda only have PO boxes for mail delivery, i.e. no home delivery - whether those countries are allowed to be in this program is a different matter.

I went ahead and changed our PO Box to our street address. Since there are two address lines, this should work.

XYZ Company (Check is payable to business name)
Attn. John Doe
Address
City, State, Zip

Any feedback on this idea?

Full breakdown of the terms are here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

I couldn't find reference to AdSense not allowing PO boxes - it could be a US only thing, though, since I am in Canada. Can anyone share where this specific information was, and if it does seem to be a US specific thing?

Jenstar. I'm in the U.S. and it won't allow a PO Box to be entered when/if you try to change your mailing address. Says, PO Box not allow in bold red letters.

Then they don't actually force you to change your address if you already have a PO address in place? I don't even want to select anything until I know more.

I used a P.O. box from the very start. Has anyone been told that they must now switch from a p.o. Box to a house address? I've gotten nothing from them regarding this. But I also haven't logged in to adsense today either.

See the discussion of "Pay-on-Death" accounts and joint bank accounts at:

[kiplinger.com...]

If you have the checks made out to "John or Jane Doe" (or whatever your names may be), you should be able to deposit the check to a joint account and draw on the money if your husband isn't around to endorse the check.

They're obviously trying to discourage fly-by-night types who try to hide multiple accounts or avoid process servers by using P.O. boxes.

It would be nice if they'd require street addresses for their records but allow P.O. boxes for checks. Of course, that would give an opening to the fly-by-nighters, who could then use made-up street addresses.

With luck, they'll soon offer direct deposit, and the P.O. box issue will go away.

That sounds about right. I initially used a PO Box, then changed it after reaching the earnings threshold for FedEx, and only got the error message after trying to revert to the box. Hmm... UPS Store?

sean, annej,

I just logged in to adsense for the first time today. Agreed to the new terms and didn't seen anything regarding me having to change my current p.o. box to a street address. Where it says this in the terms I haven't a clue. Course, as my spouse says, I'm one of the least observant people she's ever known. Can anyone cite this "p.o. box prohibition" in the new terms, please?

by the way, I live in the u.s. since the aspect of u.s. residency and p.o. box use has been tossed out there.

How about something like my hosting account, which required a real phone number which they called to verify I was a real person, presumably with my own credit card.

Like many online companies, I run my company out of my house and use a PO Box as my business address. My official business address is my PO Box. My domains are registered to my PO Box. All other checks go to my PO Box.

The postman who delivers to my house is an incompetent idiot. Often, we get other people's mail. Sometimes, other people get our mail. Sometimes stuff doesn't make it to us. When we leave outgoing mail in the box, he usually puts the flag down and doesn't take the mail. Sometimes he leaves packages on our front porch and doesn't ring the bell--we always go in and out through the garage, so we never know. I am NOT going to have any important business documents (like checks) delivered to my home address. I'm not going to pay for a forwarding service. I'm not going to get an office.

If Google asks me to switch from my PO Box to a physical mailing address, I'm pulling all of their ads immediately.

Wouldn't be a better solution to have electronically payments?.
I gladly would pay a working fee for the service.

Post can be unreliable and does very often go missing .

MovingOnUp- I am still waiting for my April check to arrive. Last month when everyone was reporting that their April checks had arrived I went to my "on the street" mailbox and there was no mail, not one piece, this is entirely odd, then the next day we received our next door neighbor's mail (her father died and is in India, and her mail has been forwarded, so she may have my Google check!).

I wish they would allow PO box (I signed up in late March '04 and the PO Box option was not available) or direct deposit. As Troy Aikman used to say "I want my money."

Normally electronic payments are less expensive for a company than mailing a check. In fact Amazon charges extra if they have to mail you a check. Automatic payments to your bank are free. So surely Google is working on offering this.

On another topic, I had no problem selecting individual for payment and no fuss about the fact I already had a PO address. Maybe it only effects changes of address.

ditto here. chose individual account and already had a p.o. box. didn't have a problem and was never told by adsense in any way, shape, or form that I should change my mailing address.

I am in the process of reading up on AdSense and giving it a try. This seems like a road block.
Like others, I am an individual that works out of the house and am using a PO Box as my official business address.
I went through the courthouse, bank etc. and have an official dba company name for my business.

Would I sign up as an individual or company?
Does this mean I cannot sign up with a PO Box?

Thank you!

I was using a POBox until last month.

Then, Google sent me a message saying that FedEx was having trouble to have a cheque delivered to me.
I spoke with FedEx and they said that (at least in my country) they would not deliver mail to POBoxes. I provided FedEx with another address, updated my profile with Google and everything is fine now.

BTW, the cheque I received is far from the tens of thousand dollars. Maybe Google is thinking of using more FedEx to send cheques, and is trying to avoid potential troubles.

Porkchop, if you want the checks made out to your company name, sign up as a company.

As for the PO box thing, do you have a compelling reason not to just give Google your home address? IMO having a PO box as your "official" company address is not a compelling reason. Nor is the earlier "my postman is an idiot". Having no home delivery whatsoever is a pretty good reason I guess, but that must be quite rare.

P.S. Don't most PO box services allow you to simply enter the box number as a "suite" or "apt."? Not that I would encourage people to mislead Google, but this trick has been around since the 1970's at least.

I want my business checks to be delivered to my business address, not my home. Why is "my postman is an idiot" not a compelling reason? I don't like lost checks.
