"Stop words"

I've seen "stop words" mentioned in this forum as a reason google will put PSA's on a page instead of ads. Is there a list of stopwords anywere? Also, is there any way Google has of checking the context of how words are used? I'm thinking that some words can be used correctly in a proper context, yet might (to some) constitute a stop word.

No not officially. You can often guess what they are in a given article though.

I have a history site and have struggled and struggled with this and the context doesn't seem to matter.

Sometimes I'm successful with rewording some of the article and other times I just give up and use alternative ads.

Some sites have reported that context does get taken into account. A gaming site with articles about particular games that include "Death" in the title do not seem to be affected by the filter.

Also keep in mind that they do update the filters as current events occur. For example, many news stories about Ronald Reagan showed PSAs last week when they otherwise would have showed targeted. The same way certain names/places get added to the filter when something tragic occurs.

As for a listing of all stop words, many can be easily guessed, but if they did publish a list of them, that could allow publishers to work around them and have ads appear on content that Google AdSense (and the advertisers) would feel was inappropriate for ads to be appearing on.

many more not allowed to be mentioned here. Common sense will tell you what is a stop word and what isnt. If you are having an issue with only PSA ads being shown i would,

1. check the page over for any words or word combonations that may be inappropiate.

2. save to a different filename and look for ads.

3. if still nothing but PSA, wait a day to make sure mediabot has found you.

4. look over page again for stop words.

5. notify google if all else fails, in a friendly manner, not a 'this is busted will you fix it' way.

If those are definite stop words, then it is context sensitive as I have both death and dying on different parts of my site (medical web site) and there are appropriate ads for the page topics.

I do have some pages that were showing PSA's all last week, and they started showing ads yesterday - not very well targetted ones though.

I had a page that had the words cocaine and morphene listed.. it is a programming example page. All I got was PSAs.

Contacted Adsense and they fixed it within 24 hours... but I also removed those words since they weren't an important part of the page.

It looks like they are accepting pages with death and such on game and medical sites. Perhaps I should write and see if they have ever considered approving them on history sites.

I have about 40 newer pages that rank fairly well for their keywords (usually hit in the first 1-5 positions of page 1 on a search), but, despite this, have gotten nothing but psa's for weeks. Changed the text, looked for stop words, changed the ad format, the whole nine yards. Today, in frustration, I said the heck with it and replaced the adsense code with ****r. didn't take but 2 or 3 refreshes before all 40 pages were pulling highly relevant ads. when i see results like that, i could care less about mulling stopwords issues.

Haystack in a needle has a negative keyword list which is supposed to be fairly comprehensive.

Thanks for the reminder, I was going to order it but wanted to wait until I was settled in the new home. I ended up forgetting all about it.

I think the main users are adwords customers so it only makes sense that it would be of benefit to adsense users as well.
