I used to use banner ads in my site, and then changed to leaderboard, the CTR increased 15%. I am now thinking of redesigning my site, and would like to make it adsense friendly. Has anyone have experience with skyscraper and leaderboard?
I know someone had talked about this, but it was last June. So may I bring it back since google has several upgrades and changes after that?
Thanks for your attention!
I suppose the new 5-ad skyscrapers might do better on some sites, but I haven't tried them--I last used skyscrapers when only the skinny 4-ad layout was available.
On 'reading pages' the leaderboard is better.
On 'link / directory / surfing' pages the skyscraper is better.
I guess this is because the vertical skyscraper is very annoying while the eyes repeatedly move from left to right. But on a page that people graze for links, it catches the attention.
On a reading page, the visitor wants to 'click away' when he arrives at the bottom of the page. It works especially well on short to-the-point reading pages. With longer stories you may have to put the leaderboard on the top, or somewhere in the middle of the content.
in our homepage - we use leaderboard with contrasting colors from our color scheme and the CTR is skyhigh
in our articles pages - we experimented and used leaderboard and sky (both blended into our colors) equally for our most read articles. CTR for skys is 150-200% more than leaderboards. we are now in the process of junking the leaderboard and go full blast to skys in the article pages
in our links pages - large rectangles give sky high CTR
in our glossary pages - large rectangles are extremely ineffective generating hardly any clicks. we will move to leaderboard or skys for this one. clicks are totally non-existent
based on our little experiment, one creative can do well for one type of content but not in the other. all you can do is to experiment as well. use your channels data to help you analyze your stats
