Channel based stats on Adsense.

I must have been checking my stats the minute it changed, cause I has my channels in and on my sites (5) in by 10:15pm EST.

Now the waiting.

Thanks Google. The channels, plus downloadable data (no more copy paste into a spreadsheet for me) are great.

Can't wait to see which of my sites is actually earning me money. Of course, the bummer will be if it is directly related to impressions. :)

Payments will be mailed to you 2-10 days after the 'Payment Approved' date shown below.

Good to see you're listening.

What does Channels mean to multiple ad units per page?

From the Program Policies:

Multiple ad units may be displayed on each Web site page, but no ad unit shall contain any advertisement in common with any other ad unit.

So does this mean that with the new channels, it's guaranteed that if i place two different channels on one page, they both will show different ads? IOW: is the new channel system also a way to have more than one ad unit per page without breaking the tos?

Now just please add Paypal and/or wire transfer as mean of payment, and Adsense will be complete as far as I'm concerned ;)

And currencies. Since they do international customers they should also do international currencies (Euro at least....). I'm loosing lots of money when I must put a US dollar check in my Euro bank. An euro wire would be much better indeed.

I appreciate the new feature. Clearly, it's not to track pages but sites, which was a feature I really wanted.

To expand on the point yump said about subdividing channels...

So far, Google adds this to the javascript:

google_ad_channel ="nnnnnnnnnn"

Of course, this acts as a 'counter' to that particular channel.

Now what would be great is if you could add /two/ or more counters to the
javascript. This way, you could track the stats of a single page, and also track
a larger set of pages which includes that single page. In other words, you could
track a single page, and a full domain.

So for example, one would use this:

google_ad_channel ="[master site number]"
google_ad_channel ="[individual page number]"

For the master site counter, the number would be used for all the pages across
the site. The individual page counter would be unique (or you could say... add it
to a couple more pages if you wished).

You could even make three or more 'counters' - imagine the flexibility with that!
To realise the true power of multiple channels, one needs multiple counters...

I have to say the new channels are a great way to solve it. While going with the domains could have been quicker, channels are obviously much more flexible.

Twenty channels are more than enough for me. In fact, I already figured out that I am only going to use 4.... Hmmmm maybe 5.....

I do think that some of the bigger publishers would benefit from more channels, but now that the infrastructure is set enough requests would get Google to add a few more channels down the line.

I also have to say that I am looking forward to doing the changes, but the beauty of SSI would let me do them within thirty minutes.

Once you've set up a bunch of channels, it's a pain to go into the build page in order to select each one individually to grab the number reference for each channel....

So, just go the the build an ad page and view source. You'll find all your channels listed in <option> tags next to their value. A quick copy & paste of the html, then find and replace in a text editor and you have a nice list of your channel names combined with the number to use for each! :)

After reading the Channel FAQ, I'm still a bit perplexed. I have 10 sites. I can create a channel for each site. But with only 10 channels left, I can only track a total of 10 individual pages on these sites. So I might track 5 pages on site #1 and 5 on site #2 and none on the rest. Is this correct?

While I like to see Google making improvements, I find that this feature will not be very useful to me. The only thing it will be able to do is track by site, which is good, but Google should already have those stats available. Why have to change code just for that?

20 channels doesn't even begin to cover the categories I would want to track, so it's rather pointless to use them. I think Google could increase the channels to say 1000 and not have to worry about the exploiters having too much info available to them. I mean it still takes 2 days for stats to become available. Of course 1000 channels would be a lot of overhead when it comes to running stats, but Google could make it so you could only run stats on channels like once per week.

spiked,
AA just mentioned above you can have as many channels as you want, but only 20 ACTIVE ones. So you can track 10 other individual pages at a time in your case.

Many threads in this forum are about stats and payments.

As Google provides detailed stats now, we can only complain about alternative payment options in the future ;-)

"Two days for channel stats to become available"
does this mean there will always be a 2-day lag in statistics for a channel, or does it mean 2 days before a new channel shows up in the stats?

Channel stats will be lagging about 48 hours.

Re: the number of channels and delay...

Given that there weren't any channels until today and therefore no reliable way of doing any experiments, I would have thought that 20 is easily enough for most people to get used to.

There is no way that any conclusion can be drawn statistically about changes you make on the day you make them, so can't see the 2 day delay matters at all. Unless perhaps if you have a huge number of impressions, the results might be worth trying to draw conclusions over within a day or so.

But given that you can now conduct a proper test, one critical factor can now be measured: the significance of a variation in CTR compared with the 'normal' variation week to week. That significance can't be concluded in a few days unless it happens to be a drastic change in CTR.

Glad to see things are moving forward and it looks like we are being listen to, can't wait to see what data the new channels bring now they have been setup.

Just need direct payment to be sorted.

Then it’s a case of just sit back relax and watch those stats, tweak a few colours ad styles ;)

Nice one, and congrats to the Adsense team, these new goodies came earlier than what I had guessed

ahem..is it clear to anyone from the FAQ (it isn't to me) whether the 2-day delay is continuous, or just occurs when a new channel is activated? it's a significant distinction.

[google.com...]

My impression from point 5 is that this means there will always be a 48 hour delay. It doesn't imply that this will be a one-off.

You are correct, but the programs is not designed to track individual pages, but groups of pages or ads.

Ok finally finished with the whole thing and ended up with 6 channels. I guess there is still a lot of room to grow. Esentially there were 4 ssi files being included, and I thought I might as well use this opportunity to ad the code to a few more places.

One word of advice, make sure you click that "update the code" buttom between changes or you might end up with skyscraper code where a banner should have been ;)
