I must admit I am disappointed that you can only have up to 20 channels
I should point out that while each publisher can have up to twenty active channels, there's no limit on the number of inactive channels you can have. You can set up any number of channels across your site, and activate any 20 channels to track various parts of your site at different times. Your stats are never deleted when a channel is deactivated, and it's very easy to reactivate it when you want to track that channel again.
I'll be checking back in periodically tonight to answer any questions you have... in the meantime, have fun with your channels!
ASA.
What are the numbers for?
I suspect for privacy reasons. I don't particularly want my competitors to see what I am tracking, and what I am grouping together to track.
Numbers would take more work. What would be easier to skim and check for on a competitor's site?
google_ad_channel ="3693456520548";
OR
google_ad_channel ="TrafficFromOv";
I still see it on my stats. There is the "Date range" as before, a new "Show" section and a new "Show data by" section in the top part of the stats page.
Maybe it's a quirk. I'm sure it will all roll itself out. The site is running realllly slow for me now, so I wouldn't be surprised at anything. I'm off to bed and expect it will be working great in the AM.
While this is great, I was thinking Google was already tracking stuff on a site by site basic. No need to change the ad code...
I agree. Shouldn't be any reason to have to change our code.
Basically, I'm pretty disappointed in this implementation. Only 20 channels...not nearly enough. I have 18 sites. So, ok, for now I can track by domain, but not by page. And once I have more than 20 sites, then what...
The programmers on this forum came up with much nicer tracking scripts than Google did. All in all, I'm glad Google did something as it will be more useful than before, but it could/should have been so much better. For those with just a few sites, or a small site, it will work nicely. For the rest of us, it's a small bandaid.
Good point AdSenseAdvisor. We can create hundreds of channels, and just rotate them with activate/deactivate... it's a start.
You could track every single page and unlimited domains... in theory at least :\ just not at the same time.
Thanks for extending our stats and I am looking forward to many more *surprises* :)
1. What are channels?Channels provide you with a way to view detailed reporting about the performance of your pages. By pasting channel-specific ad code into any combination of pages, you can track a variety of metrics across your sites. Track your leaderboard performance versus the performance of your towers, or compare your motorcycle pages to your automobile pages, by assigning each group of pages to a specific channel and comparing results in your custom channel reports. You can even assign a channel to each of your separate domains, to see where your clicks are coming from.
With up to 20 channels available for each publisher, you can use channels to gain the insight you need to optimize your site's performance. It's easy to add, deactivate, or rename your channels, and customized reports are simple to generate.
All we need now is a mathematician to work out the significance of any variations - whether they are just within normal or are a result of actions (but hoping for big, obvious effects). Its now worthwhile to log CTR over a period before and after.
Don't you just love new toys - and this one can make money as well.
If I set up a channel for each site (site A -> channel 1, site B -> channel 2), how would it be possible to track a specific page for site A using channel 3?
As I see it you need to create a new channel for every variable you wish to track.
So if you have 2 ad types on one page then you name the first channel something like.. mydomain page 1 ad 1
You then create a second channel for the same page and call it mydomain page 1 ad 2 and paste the two seperate ad codes.
I'm slightly confused if you deactivate a channel does it still accumulate stats?
While some people have made valid suggestions as to how this could be made even better, Google has created a very useful way for small publishers to improve their business --thank you Google!
( It won't alternate advert types by automatically swapping the channels. You can only use 1 code instance on a page )
In the example above, you then pick a channel that you want to test, get the code and paste it into the site page(s). When you've tested that channel, say mysite1try1, you can then test mysite1try2 by selecting the new channel, getting the code and pasting that in, instead of the first code.
The historic data for the first channel will be kept, even if you deactivate it, but data won't be collected unless its activated and the code is on a page somewhere.
However if the code is on a page, data will be collected in the aggregate data, even if your channel is deactivated. ie. the activate/deactivate is only a reporting method, not an ad delivery control.
2.Channels feature
In fact, I know you guys will have time to talk about it, so I just updated all my pages then log onto this forum, haha.
3.Downloaded report
We don't need to log into GAS 10times a day any more, we can use PHP,ASP,Coldfusion,Perl to download [google.com...]

5.Alternate color for No-Targeted-Ads-to-Display-Page
In fact, we can also use a transparent gif. :-)

Quite right Yump, I was getting a bit carried away!
For channel you should I guess read "ad type", and It does really highlight that on page code should be updated automatically. Rather than having to repaste it.
Is this new?
Select a color palette for your ads. Hold down the Control or Command key to select multiple palettes that will rotate randomly on your web page.
