The retailers who sell the industry's products will be the paying subscribers to the site. They get all sorts of exposure: classified ads, their stores searchable by brands, their stores get extensive individual website pages, etc.
When it comes to Adsense, though, the products, the brands, or even the industry itself doesn't generate any kind of interest. I ran some search terms through the Adwords calculator, and pretty much came up with one or two cents a day.
Then I ran the names of some celebritities who are hot right now, and realized that their names mean high bids.
But, this would mean creating a whole section of the site devoted to celebrities and their opinions on "Ugly Things." Some of them have never even gone public with their stance on Ugly Things, while others have.
My site is entirely content-driven, and most of the visitors coming to it will do so for the content they want to see.
However, I can envision someone searching for "Celebrity X" and finding a link to "Celebrity X and what he/she thinks about Ugly Things," and clicking on the link. Then, when they find that they're at odds with the topic of "Ugly Things," they just might click on the Adsense ads.
The Celebrities and Ugly Things section would probably constitute less than 5% of my total pages. Nevertheless, I can't afford to ignore any source of revenue.
As someone here on the Adsense forum once put it--to paraphrase--he'd love to have pages where people click on and leave immediately via the Adsense ads.
Is this idea nuts? The prime visitors to the site won't be interested. I'm just thinking of trying to draw in visitors who will look at the site and say, "Ewwww. It's about Ugly Things. But there's a Celebrity X CD for just $6.99. I think I'll check that out."
