Supersized AdSense ads when its the only ad in the block

Larger title & description font = higher CTR?

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed large PSAs across an entire ad unit. [webmasterworld.com]

Today, I noticed a paid ad that appeared as a single ad in a four-ad unit. And the font was made significantly larger. The title link and description was about twice the size, while the URL was slightly larger. I noticed it on a 300x250 ad unit. It could be on other sizes as well, but I haven't tried hunting any down to see what the size differences are.

Even though there is one ad versus up to four, the ad is much more noticeable, and would likely lead to a higher CTR as well.

Yes & No

But only if the Ad is on target, if its not then you've blown it, whereas you normally get 4 shots at it.

Also I would question an Ad that's so big, with its enlarged text etc, if this is not straying away from the Ads ability to be non intrusive, as you might as well put a big flashing banner in there instead, as they do tend to stick out like a sore thumb.

But I would have to agree you may see your CTR climb a lot higher if this one bigger than normal Ad is on Target and I think it will all come down to site specifics, content, layout, the type of visitor, selling or information sites.

When I have seen only 1 or even just 2 ads displayed in what's a normally a 4 ads box they tend to look out of place, and are on the borderline of being in yer face.

I had a leaderboard with two ads on it. I added more content, but that didn't help. So I subtracted some content and received four ads.

I prefer four ads. You never know what will appeal to the surfer.

I saw this ad on a premium site in a big rectangle format. And the ad really draws attention; I had to double take and look at it closely. It's like a big "YOU'RE VISITOR #__" ads but without the blinking. I thought it was great.

I saw this a few weeks ago on a regular sky scraper ad, and the font size was so big, that the text went way beyond the border of the ad. It does not make sense that way.

On the other hand, it might be very nice to have in a letherboard format on pages, with often returning visitors, like forums, because it draws quite a lot of attention.
