Any ideas on how I could get this to change to being more relevant? Or is it hopeless?
Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that advertisers could be targeting widgetmaking keywords for their ads for widgets. Or the widgetmaking advertisers may have opted out of content sites. And there could be just enough widget content on the page that AdSense will show the higher-paying widget ads instead of lower paying widget making ads.
I've been on Google searching using different keywords and seeing what comes up in adwords. I have some ideas now of key words to slip in. But I don't want to skew the actual topics/key words as most searchers find my site through specific topic pages. So if subtle doesn't get it I'm probably out of luck. What I am going to try is slip in 'widget making' where it is natural. After searching the ~widgeting words with these related key words I hope I have a feeling for what words Google considers as related. I find 'shop' is one. Most of my pages are information on the history of the hobby so 'shop' wouldn't be naturally used. I wonder if just using it just once on the page would affect the adsense results. Maybe I could put in a line somewhere using "widget making shop" on each page. It could link to some sort of fun page like my featured widget making shop for the month. It would be a lot of bother though if it doesn't make a difference for adsense.
For adsense to be worthwhile I need ads other than for cheap Chinese made widgets. Somehow I don't think people who consider widgetmaking as an art will be inclined to click on those. But they do make widigets. Considering themselves to be wigit artists :) I need those widgit supply shops.
Or do they do a specific crawl for adsense? In that case then a few days could make a difference.
Yes, they do a special crawl with the mediabot for AdSense, they do not use the regular googlebot for targeting ads.
Since you have only tried it on a few pages, you may get better results from the theming if you put the code on more pages.
You can also try filtering out widget ads, which would hopefully result in bringing up widget making ads. But it could be trial and error, there could be too many to block, and you could end up with PSAs if the mediabot decides that widget ads are targeted but widget making ads are not.
