Adsense Banner payout question

This is my first attempt at displaying Adsense Banners Only on a select few of our site pages. The banners are 468x60 and appear to be on target with the theme of the site which is great but I am having difficulty understanding the payout of them.

Today, my first day, the random banners received close to 10,000 reported impressions but the earnings are only reporting $0.40 cents. I figured their would be a slightly higher payout than this but at this rate I will be removing them tomorrow.

Any suggestions, things I may be doing wrong, do banners not pay much?

Thanks All!

Wait for a longer sampling period! A fraction of a day is absolutely NOT indicative of anything.

But a total of 40 cents for 10.000 impressions (that's an eCPM of 0.04$!) suggests a problem with either the positioning of your banner or the type of web site that you have them on.

Also keep in mind that the 468x60 banners are not such a great perfomer compared to other formats.

Banners are actually near the top of the page, about 100 pixels from the very top so placement is optimal. Today look no better, approximately 8000 imp. and on $0.76 cents. A bit better than yesterday but still not good for such prime real-estate....

Personally, I wouldnt recommend Google Adsense - I found the payout was very poor.

Have you tried other placements and more important other ad formats (skyscraper?)?

But maybe it has to do with your niche. Some sites just aren't suited to AdSense.
