Does anyone know if the link ad units pay less than the normal ad units?

Depends what you mean. The individual ads won't pay any less, but because it takes two clicks to get there (one for the link, the second for the ad) and the fact that more ads are shown (allowing more lower-priced ads to sneak in) then you could argue that the average price per click is lower, yes. But link units (horizontal ones in particular) can be surprisingly effective nonetheless, depending of course on the layout of your site...

For two of my sites in widely different niches, I find that link unit ads pay about the same as conventional ads. I see no evidence that, on average, link unit ads pay any less.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are the first clicks recorded for the link units? I'm assuming not.
Are you folks finding that the link units perform pretty well vs standard ad units. Obviously I'll have to find out conclusively for myself, but I'm still curious what others have to say about them.

The one AdLinks unit I use--on my home page--typically has a CTR that's nearly twice that of the AdBlocks on the rest of the site. Click value is similar...

For two of my sites, link units are top performers. On another site, link units are a strong second place (only wide skyscrapers do better).

Hi there --
Clicks to link unit topics do not generate revenue for you. However, when a user clicks on a topic and is brought to a page of related ads, a clicks to one of these ads DOES generate revenue for you.
