For a particular topic using adsense I used to make around $50 a month. The EPC used to fluctuate widely.
I removed the Adsense on that page and replaced with an affiliate program. The average earnings for that topic are around $300 a month.
My opinion : Adsense is not perfect. Google always tries to err in favor of the Advertisers.
So a well fitting Affiliate program always beats Adsense hands down.

Why not have both? The real strength of AdSense is its ability to fill in the gaps. On my travel site, for example, hotel affiliate programs generate substantial income, but only from readers who are looking for hotels. If I write an article on Elbonian kayak cruising (which I might easily do for editorial reasons), the readers of that article aren't likely to be interested in booking otel rooms. That's where AdSense comes in: By displaying ads for Elbonian kayak-cruise outfitters and travel agencies that sell Elbonian kayak cruises, AdSense generates revenue from pages that otherwise would be loss leaders.
