I applied for adsense this morning and have relavant ads on my site something like 4 hours later. I did not know it was that fast. My site only has 7 pages on it.
I agree - it can be fast. You've stumbled upon a key point though - size of the site in pages. It's key because the speed with which the site is approved and is serving relevant ads is dependent on the number of pages on the site in question.
That's because a human Google editor must review enough pages from the site to make a determination and after approval the delay before relevant ads are shown is related to a complex formula which takes into account the logarithm of the number of pages on the site and the number of links in the web universe of all sites linked within d degrees of separation. Part of the problem is that no one knows what base is used for the logarithmic component of the function and there's wide speculation about the value for d (and d may have changed since AdSense program inception in June).
Anyway, for you geeks and scientists out there here's the equation for determining how long it takes between receipt of an AdSense application and relevant ads being displayed on an approved site with the AdSense code already pre-enabled. Enjoy.
PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))
