What is the current thinking on images close to Ad units

I wanted to get the current thinking on placing images next to or aligned to adsense ads . . .
I still see sites doing this but I have not heard feedback on this . . .

Many people are doing it. If I understand correctly, the TOS forbids anyone from drawing attention to the ADS. I have not heard from anyone getting banned because of placing images next to the ADS, but I am sure it's very close to the boundaries and may be even in the other side. If you want to keep your account, ask Google directly.
