I'm an adsense publisher and in my logs i'm seeming referrals from http*//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/ads?client=etc etc...

I don't run adwords for this site.

following the link shows a blank page with the ad customised as per my site, with my URL, publisher ID, etc in the query string - anyone else had the same? and why would that would be in my referrals?

I have seen something like this. A friend of mine asked me to look at his log because he saw something strange in it. I took a look and there was a hit looking for the Google ad. The strange part about it is that he is not an AdWord or AdSense customer although he does sell a product. Also the hits went to the ip of the machine he is on and not the domain. Very strange thing. Only happened about 4 times though.

Oh. I have an idea. Let me check some things.

As far as I know, this can happen if the visitor has an Opera browser.

May be you have in common that you have referal programs?

I have heard of people that does not webmaster any more , they did in the past and got into several marketing networks but sold their sites or so.

Instead of master a web site what they does now is AdWords marketing using their referals account, then they buy AdWords and similar advertisement to put Ads in for brand products in SERPS and Publishers web sites, then if a sale is made thay get the commisions ... they say that way they don't need to deal with effort of have a site runnign and updated and they can see result in short periods of time (1 hour), they will know very quick if a product can be sold and gets popular or so checking the CTR and PI ...

Could it be the reason? some body is using AdWords in your behalf?

I'm not sure what's going on. I did some more checking and I don't get it.

What I do know is this:

It's a free product.
He is not an AdSense publisher.
He is not an AdWords advertiser.
He does not run any AdSense code and never has.
The AdSense url is in the correct format but Google generates and error when you go to it.
The url that a user would be directed to is a valid url that has his product listed for download.
The website for the product has no incentive to advertise for him because it is free.
The logs indicate several browsers and none are Opera.

I just started seeing referrals from pagead2.googlesyndication.com, too. After a little investigation I figured out that it was because I had just turned off AdSense's public service ads with a redirect to a file on my site.

JAG, is it the mediabot he's seeing, or actual googlesyndication referrals - perhaps someone is framing his site, and running AdSense in the frame - this would send the mediabot running to his site, regardless of the browser type.

Nope. Not the mediabot. It really is strange. I really am stumped on this one.
