I just got a tiny little portable drive in the mail saying happy holidays... I heard some just got cards. Any players out there get any other swank swag?

Thumb drives, scarves and greeting cards [webmasterworld.com] were the gifts for publishers this year.

Did everybody get one of these? Or just publishers in the USA? Is it just high-traffic publishers?

It wasn't everyone, not even everyone in the US. I didn't get a card or any objects and my November check didn't show up until Jan. 5th (days after they'd appeared in New Zealand and Thailand).

I got the card early in December here in Wellington, NZ. Then my November cheque early January, as reported. No sigth of my October cheque still.

No thumb drive or scarf :(

Maybe I'm just a sore loser, but -- while I don't blame Google for sending schwag to its more lucrative publishing partners -- I do think it would have been thoughtful and appropriate for Google to have sent cards... heck, even e-cards!... to the remaining publishers.

E-cards would have presented Google with an opportunity to not only wish us a happy holiday and a prosperous new year, but also to thank us for being pioneers with their new service... helping to test it, offer feedback, and hold tight despite a few wrinkles.

In contrast, I sometimes worry that -- in getting particularly big and successful -- Google may be increasingly overlooking the little niceties that help cement and sustain relationships. Some of us, indeed, may earn for Google 1/100th what the 'big guys' do, but in the aggregate, I'm sure we're providing quite a hunk of change for them... not to mention word of mouth.

So anyway, I'm going to be a surrogate Google for a moment, and wish a wonderful 2004 to all of us, including Google :). Here's to a new year in which we find or maintain not only financial success, but of equal importance, success in current and new relationships... online and offline!

No card, no goodies, no complaints. I got my check on time, and that was enough to put me in a holiday mood. :-)

Nothing for me :(

*when* my site is top of its category and pulling in millions of visitors per day I shall throw the gift back in their face and say "where was the gift when I was starting out!?"
Bad practice not to send everyone a gift if your sending any IMO.

I recieved the mini usb memory also. It was sent to me as an Adwords advertiser though, not as an Adsense publisher. I didn't get anything for being a publisher.

>>I didn't get anything for being a publisher.

I am not sure why anyone would "expect" to get card, goodies etc for being a publisher.

The way it normally works is that you send the goodies to your customer, that is the person who pays you for supplying a service. Presumably to thank them for their custom, and in the hope that they will continue to buy your service in the coming year

I shouldn't think that many AdSense publishers sent the nice person in Google a card, let alone an inscribed coffee mug or whatever. :)

I wanted to, but that "nice person" is a large team of anonymous people using a shared e-mail address, and a coffee mug wasn't scaleable. :-)

Just to be clear - I didn't expect anything for being a publisher.

Me too. I'm in Canada as an Adwords advertiser and an Adsense publisher got a card. Thus, I got a card for advertising on Adwords!

I think we can be safe to assume that the cards and swag were for Adwords customers and nothing to do with Adsense

Nope... I don't have an adwords account -- I'm only an adsense publisher -- and I got the 32MB USB thumb drive.

Maybe Google uses a randomizing function in places we would never suspect -- they don't want their competitors to know too much. ;)

I got two - one from Adwords and one from AdSense, because of the slight variations in how each was addressed.

The plot thickens.......

I wonder why Google would send these gifts randomly, if they know that there is something like an Adsense Forum on Webmasterworld, where all hot topics about Google/Adsense are discussed?

If that is true, it's not a smart move IMHO.

Time to modify me address slightly... ;)

Interestingly, they were the same mailing address, same email address but my name was slightly different for Adwords, since it had to appear exactly how it appeared on my credit card.

CPC I think you got your shows mixed up ;)

" Just the facts ma'am " was Joe Friday from Dragnet.

Hawaii 5-0 was " Book-em Dano "

But what we really need to solve this mystery of who got cards and why is Columbo.

Does it really matter ;)

If you didn't get anything, spend your time figuring out how you can improve your CTR and increase your traffic over the next year, so that next December you will get something, or get something even better. I doubt Google will send out belated holiday greetings.

They could have sent goodies to those over a certain $, those with more than X number of page views, to those who signed up prior to a certain date, or even based upon how frequently (or infrequently) someone checked their stats ;) Who knows, but I would definitely guess $ each publisher earned for Google is key.
