It's called "branding." Look at the bottom of a search page on Google and you'll see Gooooooogle, with each page in the results matching up with an "o."

I think the implication is "there's lots of stuff on Google." Or something.

In any case, people are more likely to notice it.

i think it is done to counteract the extreme blending that some sites use. without something noticable, there would be even more unintentional clicks.
