Adsense in blog post entries

Most blog sites I see I have noticed that they have Adsense ads embedded in each blog post. Yet only three of their posts display ads.

How do they do this?

Do they embed adsense so that it shows up only in the top three or they have adsense embedded in all entry posts but only the most recent entry display adsense?

Say I want adsense to appear at the bottom of each of my blog entries, but if I have 10 entries on the main page then 10 ads will show up?! This would be against the TOS to have 10 adsense ads displayed!

I don’t know how bloggers tackle this issue but I have seen them embed adsense in their blog entries but yet only the most recent 3 blog entries display the adsense ads when their index page displays 10+ blog entries.

Does adsense automatically not show ads when there is more than 3 units embedded?

Metaphorically

That'd be my first guess. I've also noticed that pages that don't get much traffic (or is it adsense accounts that don't see much traffic?) don't show ads all the time - sometimes they just render blank.

Google automatically only shows 3 ad units per page regardless of what the dynamic blog post tell it to do.

The same thing is on one of my weblogs as well.

I would mention that having three adunits per page is not ideal imho.
