I need a bit of help understanding the reason

I just tried to sign up for AdSense a few days ago and a few minutes ago got a response saying it had not been approved. They gave a detailed reason but I'm ashamed to say I don't understand what it means. Here it is:

Path or sub-domain: At this time, we don't have the capacity to support domain path level websites through the AdSense program. We require AdSense participants be able to run ads on all pages within the submitted domain.

The domain I submitted was not a path or a subdomain; it was in the format of [mydomain.com....]

Has anyone else been denied for this reason, and how can it be overcome?

You should get some great feedback here, but be sure you also contact the Adsense team for an expanded explanation. Reinforce the fact that what you submitted was not a subdomain. Provide your [domain.com...] again so that it can be looked at by another set of eyes at Google.

If the domain that you are talking about is the one in your profile then I think that you should have been accepted. I cannot see any reason why your site should have been turned down.

Write back and explain that you are in control of all of your pages. It may be better to work on the basis of www.mydomain.com but that should not make a difference. You may have had your application looked at in a post holiday rush and someone may have glanced and thought that you had submitted a site such as [thisis.mysite.com....] If that was the case then their reason makes sense.

Don’t give up and good luck

Looking at the site in your profile, the only reasons I could see for adsense rejecting you, are either

1) They think you need to logon to read the articles

or

2) The url for the article has a lot after the .cgi? and may be hard for google to index correctly

but the most likely reason appears to be

3) They need to site to run from www.domain.com not domain.com ie there must be a subdomain (www) for adsense to work

Adsense works fine on one of my sites which is always domain.com (www.domain.com gets a 301 redirect to domain.com, like Matthew's), so I don't think there's a problem there. More likely just a misunderstanding of some sort.

robho - is the domain.com site the one you signed up to adsense with, or did you sign up with a www.widgets.com style site?

Works fine from my http*//domain.com

In fact I use a 301 to force domain.com

I would tend to agree with uncle_bob. The Google rep that reviewed your site may have determined that most pages on your site are password protected.

Displaying AdSense on password protected pages may be against Googles TOS.

I signed up with a www.domain.com style name and added the (diiferent) domain.com one later. But I doubt the lack of www would cause any problem even at signup (indeed, it's a clearer indication that you own the whole domain name than if you just had the www).

Actually the site I tried to sign up with was not the one related to my profile. However, upon being denied earlier today, I followed the instructions for signing up with another domain. This time I tried my profile site, which I submitted without the w's. Just now I received a "Welcome to AdSense" e-mail. My guess is the first denial was a mistake of some sort. Thanks everyone for your input!

Thats good news Matthew, welcome to adsense. If google gives you any feedback as to why you were initially rejected, please let us know, as the more we understand the google, the better.

Matthew,

Be sure that you verify with Google that the original domain submitted is not on the "marked" list prior to putting adsense on pages of that originally submitted site.

If it is marked as rejected, then the ads will not do you any good on that site, it will only show PSA's, if anything.
