Disabling AdSense click-thrus by geographic region

AdSense filtering question

This is my first post. Just got AdSense running on a 1000 page php site that's taken months to create. Ad relevancy is improving by the day, though it seems to fluctuate like the weather.

A concern I picked up some time ago on this Board is the danger of getting kicked off for "suspect" ad clicks coming in from the region where you are based. I live on Maui and will be launching the site soon at a Tech event here. I can't control who will click on what. (Note: site is live but still in mock-up phase, under construction)

Is it advisable to "geo block" all ads from Maui or even from all Hawaii clicking through? Can one program a universal supression of all ad clicks for one's region? Or am I unduly worried about Google's fraud detection assumptions? Naturally I would like the Maui community to be able to click on my ads.

I've searched AdSense Help and can find no advice. E-mails to Google elicit a programmed response advocating using the AdSense Preview Tool to make a filter list.

They also say: "Because IP addresses can be allocated from various sources, and due to the fact that valid clicks may be blocked as a result, we are not able to block IP addresses provided by publishers."

So, is the "disabling" of all ads from being clicked locally, (as suggested in this forum) even possible? If so, how is it done?

Thanks in advance!

You can't intercept and disable clicks. You CAN prevent your server from showing ads to certain IP blocks or geographical areas altogether. This can be done using server-side scripting, e.g. with PHP or SSI.

AFAIK very few people bother to do this. I certainly don't think it's necessary under normal circumstances. I think a better approach at first is to not show ads at all during your launch. Why would you want to be at some tech expo demonstrating your website that's covered in AdSense ads that, let's be honest, look a little cheesy? Seems like it would be easier to generate buzz if your site was ad-free for the time being.
