I'm starting to think that the more adsense ads you have displayed on your site the less you will make.
For a long time i had 3 different ad units displaying in different postions on my site and 1 link unit.

One day (1 month ago) i took all of them off and just put one 250x250 box in the middle of the page and left the link unit where it was. I've been running my site with only 1 ad unit for a month now and my income increased by 40%.

Is it because there is less room to display the low paying keywords? If i had 3 ad units that means there is more room for the low paying keywords to show up, when you only have one ad showing then you only have the highest paid advertisers showing. I dont know if this is true but thats just a little thing i have noticed this month since i've switched.

2 days ago i added another ad unit to the top of my page, so now i have 2 ad units. I will see if my earnings decrease or increase or stay the same. How many ad units do you guys have displaying on your page?

I either use one or two ad units, depending on which page it is on. I find that one ad unit does give me a better CTR than two.

I was curious about this as well.

I have one skyscraper on each side and one leatterboard on the top of the site. (15 ads total)

I was wondering if removing those and only having one ad unit on my page would work.

See which one gets you most click if you have channels set up, then take the other two out and see if your earnings increase.

That is a good idea. I just might do that! ;)

there will be something about it... also 3 adblocks are quite a lot unless you got a lot of text and content on the site, so visitors may feel a bit "overloaded" with many ads...

one thing that i've found is that the more ads you have, the less focused the ads get as you go down the page.
it depends on which subject you are advertising, of course, but for my site the really decent ads only fill about 5 spaces, and after that it's hit and miss - some of them are so off-topic that it doesn't matter how much i rewrite the page, they will still stay the same. there seems to be only so many decent ads to go around, and after that i am scrapping around for crumbs.

if you do run a lot of ads, then at least make sure that the first ad (the one that appears first in your HTML) is the main one that everyone will see.

I switched from 2 ads - one on the left menu, and one in the center hotpsot - to one, and CTR and earnings nearly doubled, while impressions stayed steady - this is on a low traffic site, but the results have held up for over a week..

Without pondering on specifics I think the general advise (from posts here and Google I think) is that less is more when it comes to Google adverts (considering you can have several ad blocks, ad units and search blocks per page).

I kept the meduim rectangle and had my content wrap around it.

Impressions dropped, CTR and earnings went up.

CTR means nothing if your impressions are coming from crap placements.
It's all about the total earned at the end of the day.

I agree, you should keep only the ads that have good click through rates - it does make a difference to your earnings. But there is definitely more than one spot where users may click-through. It's important to find those hot areas to maximize earnings.

One should also look out for CPM ads. If you see that you are getting many CPM ads then you should definitely keep all three-ad units to make more space for them.
