When checking the site it seems that the adsense section of the page is loading very slowly, taking between 5 and 10 seconds to load. Has anyone else noticed this?
If so, is there anything that can be done?
I've tested removing the sections of code that access a database in case that was slowing down the page, but the slowness remains.

In the past I and others were succesful putting Adsense ads themselves in IFrames. This allowed the core webpage content to load and Adsense could trickle in when it got around to it. Last year Adsense partially broke this IFrame solution.
All you can do is place your Adsense code toward the very end of your page content, so everything else is rendered first. Use a "div" (Frontpage position) to place the ads "absolutely" where you would like to see them on the page.
The Adsense servers must be under some kind of attack; there seems to be a lot of turmoil the last few days.
Clearly Google has improved their servers. When I was forced to remove IFrames, I could see the performance and reliability had been enhanced from the time when I originally added IFrames to eliminate Adsense delays. Google Adsense had become much more reliable over a period of a year or so. (I've been using Adsense since mid 2003)
Google used IFrames for Adsense itself, but there still could be delays fetching the Adsense Javascript, (probably one of the most cached scripts ever). This is one strong justification for wrapping Adsense in an IFrame.
Adsense Advisor offered to help debug IFrame functionality when it failed, but, I had to inform ASA I had already pulled the IFrames (got to keep the cash flowing, you know!)
Google's Adsense perceived end user performance may actually be assisted by ISP and end user caching of the Adsense Javascript. So there may still be transient performance issues. Then sometimes the web slows down too!
