On one page four clicks = earnings 0.03 cents.
How is that possible?

You mean, how is it possible that at least one of these clicks didn't result in at least 0.01 earnings?
There could many reasons. One of them being that your website showed PSA's (public service ads). They don't generate earnings for you.

And for the initial question: is it worth the hassle?
The answer is yes.
Work hard, be patient, do this for the long run (think in years, not in months), you'll be rewarded.

Rewarded with what?

It's all relative. Many people think generating $50 a month from Adsense is "rewarding". In my own experience, which is naturally narrow and subjective, Adsense makes a lot of money for large corporations at the expense of exploiting hobbyists, the naive and small businesses.

That said, I have heard it argued that "Adsense pays my hosting costs and I'm happy with that."

Each to their own. But for me. No. it's not worth it.
