It takes a while to build up traffic but DONT give up. Go to the best and biggest forums for whatever topic you are writing about and promote their. Dont write like an advertiser write like a normal person that came across a good website and wants to share it. You will get more traffic that way. Then submit your site to google. Afterwards, keep posting on forums and search google for more "website submitters."

I'm not a pro at it as I just started my blog on 1/20 but I can give you some advice based on what I've been doing and where I think I've made mistakes.

If I had to start all over again, here's a list of things I've come up with that I would do. This is all from a total noob so hopefully some of the more experienced people out there can comment:

For a while I'd just try to get content posted daily. Don't really worry about visitors at this point -- just keep posting quality content.

Perhaps a couple weeks after starting you can look for directories, link exchanges, RSS feeds... things of that sort. This will probably bring in very little traffic but it should help build up page rank (which I have yet to get).

Don't forget to get your blog pinged after you update entries so searches know you have new content.

I think I made a mistake of submitting to DMOZ way too early. I got all excited about starting my blog that I probably didn't have enough content to be accepted. I'll think about trying again in another 6 months to a year after I get something going for me.

Even though Google has me, I have 0 Page Rank there. Nonetheless, I still get visitors from Google. I signed up for a service that tells me exactly where my visitors are coming from, where they searched to find me and a lot more (I'm not sure what the policy is of giving out links so I won't do it) -- and it tells me that some clicks are coming from Google searches. The odd thing is that sometimes I find my link on Google exactly where it says they found me -- and sometimes I'm not even listed in the first 1000 search results. Weird!

Just one more thing: click exchanges are totally useless. It will bring you traffic but I highly doubt anyone reads those things. Take all of the time you would've considered spending in one of those writing content instead -- it'll probably go a long way in the end.

Since this is an AdSense forum I think I better sneak in a tid bit about AdSense. I get few clicks but I've managed to squeeze out a couple after putting in a blended add at the bottom of the entry in between the entry and the comment area.

Anyways, as someone who has had about a 3 week jump start on you -- that's what I've got so far. I wish you the best of luck. For anyone more experienced feel free to comment. I'm just getting going myself so if you think I'm making mistakes I want to know what I'm doing wrong so I can make it right. Thanks!
