I'm getting great results with a small rectangle adlink unit in the upper left hand corner.

Google has a good page on the best places for ads.

Place 160x600 at the left side. Move the navigation to the right side.

Start with Google's heatmap, but bear in mind that different sites have differing CTRs.

Test your ad in a particular position for at least a week. Move it, and test for at least another week. Move it again, and test it for at least a week. Get the idea? ;)

Keep doing this and in time you'll eventually have the perfect placement.

Place 160x600 at the left side. Move the navigation to the right side.

Only if you're willing to confuse users who are accustomed to seeing navigation links on the left side.
