I've used Adsense section targeting above and below the body of each post. And also set section targeting 'ignore' in navigation and housekeeping blocks.
I avoid the word 'blog' like the plague. Looking around at other sites I find it pulls too many blog-related ads.
If you plan to run Adsense within the post body, be sure to include it only after the 'more' tag, that way you won't run into the possiblity of 10 or 20 ad blocks on any page where snippets from multiple posts might be displayed.
There are a couple of Wordpress plug-ins that make it simple to insert the ad code in individual posts. Play around with a couple of them to see which best suits your needs.
You'll find a lot of websites, including some of the larger blogs and blog networks use WP. It "just works" and works very well.
Make sure and use the AdSense targeting and you should be able to keep the name with "Blog" in it without getting blogging ads.
There are a few AdSense-oriented themes for WordPress (although they are for the most part three-column, if that matters).
