Well I have a few basic questions to ask.

First, do you think it is necessary to have a .com site (instead of freewebs..etc..) to actually see true profit?

Second, do you use advertising like google adwords to gain your traffic?

Third, when you look at the payouts for keywords do these represent payouts for each click?

Also, do you have any advice that could help me along on my new journey? :) Thanks in advance!

Firstly welcome to WebmasterWorld.

First, do you think it is necessary to have a .com site (instead of freewebs..etc..) to actually see true profit?

It is always better to have dedicated paid hosting space rather than free space provided by your ISP. It will certainly help with rankings especially if your site is in a popular field.

Second, do you use advertising like google adwords to gain your traffic?

Sometimes, but personally, I am a skinflint so I prefer to gain free search engine traffic. A lot of people make a great living using adwords alone.

As for your 3rd question I have been unable to decipher the earnings per click, what with smart pricing and the like it seems to fluctuate daily.

The important thing to remember is unique content rules the roost. If you have a site with something that people want that they can't find elswhere you will do well.

hi jordan and welcome to WW
Absolutely go for a .com and avoid free hosting, cost wise its negligible, and the difference is huge providing you do everything else right too.

some use adwords, others depend on search engine ranking and traffic, but the most important thing to remember is that if you build it well, they will come and keep coming.

We do not know what each individual click get us, we just divide our total earnings by the number of total clicks to find out our earnings per click, as for keywords, we use channels to group ads by topics of our sites and from that deduce which topics make us how much.

Be prepared to do some serious reading, starting from Google's TOS and help documentation and then here in the forum, dig in and don't get out till you feel you have a good grasp of all that is written.

Happy Journey and again welcome onboard
