Can Alternate Ads be text-based, content-targeted?

Google's TOS states: "You also agree not to display any other text-based or content-targeted advertisement(s) on the same Web page in connection with which an Ad Unit or any Ad is displayed."

However, the alternate ads are displayed only when AdSense doesn't (in place of PSAs). Are text-based, content-targeted ads from another provider allowed here?

but the technical problem is that the alternate ads would load inside google adsense code... if you run, say, Overture content ads, its own system will have a difficult time figuring out what content your page has. Is this the case?

Only if the Overture system uses a spider to do its targetting. It might be that the sites are human checked and then it wouldn't be much of a problem.

Indeed, I choose the keywords and the page is not automatically spidered, so that isn't a problem.

What remains is whether Google will allow competitors for the AdSense alternate?

I'd be interested to know a definite answer too, but I already display CJ text only ads as AdSense alternate.

Google does not want any ads to appear in alternate ads that resemble Adwords.

JollyK got confirmation on different text-based ad styles from Google, so he had an approval of what styles were allowed on alternate ads.

[webmasterworld.com...] msg # 50 has all the information on how you can use text based ads without offending the AdSense team.
