Firefox and new tabs

would Google count this as invalid clicks?

There've been a few instances on here lately where folks have asked "can I set my ads to open in a new window". I don't do it, and we should! all know this is against TOS.

But I'd like to raise the following scenario.

As a Firefox user, I have it set up to automatically open any link I click on in a new tab. Does anyone know what would happen if a visitor, who also has their Firefox browser set up this way, were to click on an ad which automatically opened in a new tab/new window?

Has Google considered this feature of Firefox? Would Google count the click, not count the click, or see it as an invalid click which could lead to banishment if there were too many of them? A scary thought given Google is promoting a browser that does this!

How would this be a problem? Firefox has nothing to do with that. When a link is clicked it tells the browser to open it into a new tab instead, not the internet. Google wouldn't even know you are doing it because nothing is sent back telling them.

As long as the adsense ads are set up correctly, there will be no problem.

Exactly. This is invisible to Google and, as normal user behaviour, is irrelevant to Google.

But I have to add that the first thing I did when I switched to Firefox is disable all the tabbed browsing options.

As it's been said, it has no impact - Google won't care or won't know whether the click opened a new window in IE or a new tab in FF.

I just ctrl-click on the link and have it open that link in a tab in the background - best thing to happen to browsers in a long time. Regular clicking opens the link in the same tab as I'm currently on.

As a publisher, I couldn't live without tabbed browsing - as a user/reader - it would be very difficult.

Thanks for the responses. Knowing something is OK as opposed to thinking it's ok is reassuring. Thinking can sometimes be expensive, especially where Adsense is concerned :)

Useful for research purposes when I need to compare several of the same thing at once, or when I'm publishing to several sites at the same time!

We ask that publishers do not modify the AdSense code to open ads in a new window. This would be considered a policy violation because it would interfere with the user experience.

However, if a user adjusts her individual browser settings to open links in new windows, it doesn't affect your AdSense account.

Hope that clarifies!
