Running AdSense & Alternative text ads on same page

Would this be an AdSense violation?

If your visit the homepage of <snip> you can see <snip> new text ads.

These are not dynamic ads though...

Think these are against google's policy?

From the AdSense Policies page:

We do not permit AdWords ads to be published on web pages that also contain what could be considered competing ads. This would include all content-targeted ads as well as text-based ads

I would say that covers all text ads, dynamic or not, no?

well, I asked google and got a reply...

Basically, dynamical ads are a definite no because they are competative ads.

Text Ads however (according to the email) fit in the "after we see them, we will decide if they are ok" category.

After seeing the example <snip> example, I really think they will consider it a "No" because they do infact look alot like google ads.

And what about IntelliTXT from Vibrant Media?
I see a lot of sites who use this together with Adsense

They also appear to be a violation of AdSense policies.

Vibrant Media "creates commercial text links from keywords appearing within pages of online content." That would fall under "content-targeted ads" which are not permitted in the AdSense policies.

What about using one of these for google_alternate_ad_url?

Do you think Google would still frown upon it?

I don't use it, but I have seen it before. I think I'll try signing up.

Google does not allow anything than looks like AdSense to be run as an alternate ad.

And why push the envelope in this regard? If you would like to try a competitor, it is much smarter to do it on pages you aren't running AdSense on, than it is to go inserting competitor's ads into the AdSense space if there are PSAs. You never know what kind of things they are tracking at the Googleplex - seeing what publishers are using as alternative ads could be one of them - especially when competitors are used as those alternative ads.

I saw this in action today (ironically running on the same page as AdSense), and it definitely is contextual advertising.

It is quite unique how it is displayed - it picks out specific keywords within the text, underlines them, then a large text ad pops up on mouse-over, which you can clickthrough to the site. Not sure how good the CTR would be, because it isn't that evident it is something you can click, unless you were already familiar with this program.

It appears that they are getting their ads from Overture.

You also cannot right click to see the complete URL, which obviously is going to cause problems with publishers who are genuinely interested in their own ads.

They use MS Smart Tags, which means these ads will only appear to those using IE6. All other browsers, including older IE, will not show these ads.

Jen, I too saw something like that the other day. It was on a large hardware review type of site...it seemed like ever paragraph had one of these links.

Oh, thank goodness! I thought some spyware junk had snuck into my system! But this explains what's going on...

ThatAdamGuy - I can definitely see that people would think they possibly have adware/spyware installed when visiting a site like this.

The site I saw it on actually explained what the ads are, and how they worked. I wouldn't have realized they were ads unless I happened to mouse-over them. The only reason I DID know they were ads is because I landed on the page explaining the ads first ;)
