Banning website ads or Root URL's

Some reasons for not using the ad filter.

Some thoughts on banning.

I finally have my eCPM going back up and decided to empty the ad filter (all except the dreaded EBay and one other) and noticed another improvement right away, (within 8 hours) and that started me thinking.

Google ad filters ONLY let us ban the root URL of the COMPNY selling the ads. You are never allowed to directly ban a website itself unless the site has done a direct buy from Google.

The cases I see the most of are where small ad sellers may have a few ads sold and purchased ad space then show their ads in rotation. These sellers may have some killer ads that pay well and perform well and be well targeted to your site BUT, the other ads they are rotating with the good one may not be and if you catch one of the "bad" ads then you block the advertiser/seller and not the offending website.

Kind of like throwing the baby away with the bathwater. I wish Google would let us ban individual websites and not just the ad server base URL.

Just my thoughts on the subject. What is yours?

hi ann,

>if you catch one of the "bad" ads
I still do not know how you guys do that, we do not get any data on how much each individual ad pays, even if you click track.

>ONLY let us ban the root URL of the COMPNY selling the ads. You are never allowed to directly ban a website itself

What is the diffence between the root url and the company website?

Thanks for responding,

From my post above I said that a lot of the offending ads are sold through small ad companies who purchase space from Google and then rotate the few ads they have.

If they have one killer ad that is just great for your site, targeting etc, there may be a dozen more untargeted, or scrapper, or scam ads. By banning the root (the ad company) and not the website name or url of the actual website itself then you throw out the good as well as the bad. :(

I do not have a clue how you would find out which ad pays best but I do investigate the ads every now and then to catch the scrapers and scammers.

"all except the dreaded EBay and one other"

I must have missed this discussion, why is ebay "dreaded" and what is the other? :) For me, ebay ads (very well targeted to my site) appear often ...

Thez, it sounds like you've never seen an eBay ad trying to sell things like "used cake icing" or "dead popes". That's why they're dreaded to many of us.

Ann what I find on my site is the low preforming ads are mostly MFAs and MFO/Ys with a few 404s, scammers and info harvesters thrown in.

If, as you say, some companies are running multiple ads and we block the root URL then that's just too bad. If the ad I blocked didn't meet my criteria then it's unlikely any of the others will either. If i miss one or two good ads then so be it.

In all the checking I've done it's just amazing to me what awful sites people are prepared to spend money on (AW) in hopes that they will get a net return. They must be bidding very low and covering a multitude of search terms.

Many look like they took a total of 5 minutes to create - page title, AS or O/Y code and nothing else. It bothers me that someone could even make any money this way.

Well, as long as I can, they won't be making it off my sites.

Right you are TI,

I just wish Google would let us actually ban the website URL itself, :(

I will be off line for a few days (maybe), everything is being turned off so I can get moved in.

Different area so have to make all manner of changes.... may even have to go to, shudddeeerr, dial-up.

Carry on without me for awhile :)

On ad filter Google's Help says:
example.com/sub will not block ads to example.com/products or example.com/sub/index.html

in [google.com...]

Improvement proposal for the preview tool

[X] Use URL Filter

So I could look on my page with URL filter turned on or off.

When an interesting ad does not show with filter turned on, I could look for the reason.
