I find it hard to believe that getting more ads to compete for the same ad space should cause a lowering of earnings.
The picture is further clouded by the fact that Google also tries to guess how much a CPM ad is worth as compared to a CPC ad. This appears to be based upon the relative performance of each ad, not the historic performance of the page or website. So if the choice is to display a CPC ad which has an eCPM of $5 or a CPM ad which will generate $5.01 over 1,000 impressions, the CPM ad is displayed - even on a page of your site where the same CPC ad would generate an eCPM of $20. This is supposed to balance out because the CPM ads also show on your lower performing pages, but it doesn't always work out in the publisher's favor. (In my experience, although Google doesn't provide the statistical information necessary to be sure, it seems to cut eCPM significantly more often than it increases eCPM.)
The mingling of CPM and CPC results also confounds the effort to track performance by channel. Statistics for CPM ads should be tracked separately from statistics for CPC ads. (I think Google doesn't track separately because, even on some sites where CPM ads do raise overall earnings, many publishers would gasp at how little many CPM advertisers are paying and want to opt out.)
I opted out yesterday and this is still on my site. Revenue is down about 20-25% and Monday-Tuesday are usually my busiest days.I hope this comes off soon. It is very annoying.
My thoughts exactly.
Since yesterday I have noticed a huge drop in every stat except impressions.
Since yesterday "Advertise on this site" has been showing up on my site for the first time.
This is not coincidence.
I opted out about 6-7 hours ago and it's still there. It's like I'm being forced to lose money. It's a terrible feeling.
My preference would've been for it to be an option for us to opt-in on, versus it being put in for everyone and it having to be manually removed.
I run adsense on a couple of sites which generate close to a million ad impressions per month. Ever since the "Advertise on this site" change, I have seen a slight increase in both CPM and CTR. Interestingly enough, I had one company contact me this morning to let me now they were were using the service and were also interested in additional non-adsense related advertising. The ads they are using certainly are showing up more frequently than others but the bottom line hasn't changed much.
I think that it is important to understand, companies like Google need to open new lines of revenue to remain competitive. More choices for both publishers and advertisers is a good thing for us and for Google. You have the option to opt out. It may hurt your bottom line for a day or two (and I'm not disputing that it does- every site is different) but what you see as negative may help you in ways you can't immediately see.
It seems so much of the G policies are shrouded in mystery and G wants to keep things secret.

Just a little hint that might speed things up... if there is a way to delete the logo for your site that you put on the landing page, delete the logo and this might speed up them dropping you from the service.
I noticed that when I opted in to the service the link on the ads would not show up until I uploaded the logo for the landing page.
Until today, i didnt even know on site advertiser sign up link has been appearing below my ad units. And I have seen a significant decrease for the last couple days. When I visited my web site today I saw the annoying advertise on this site link below my 728 x 90 ad units.
First of all it looks amateur, even though it didnt effect my earnings I was going to remove it anyways. As you know on the left bottom side of the 728 x 90 ad unit there is a link says "Ads by Google" and Now, on the right bottom of the ad unit there is "Advertise on this site link" If I were a visitor I wouldnt click on that ugly ad unit. My ad units just look like a chair! with 2 links below the whole ad unit and those links look like chair's legs.
I turned it off and lets see what happens. Even though it may not have an effect on my CTR (which I believe it has an affect) I dont want to show my visitors ugly ad units. C'mon Google you could be more creative ;)
